Photography for me really started several years ago when I picked-up a simple point & shoot camera and started recording world around me. While I was able to capture some of life’s moments, I found myself frustrated that I was not getting the results I was looking for. Admittedly this frustration generally stemmed from either the limitations of the equipment or my still rudimentary knowledge of the art and science of photography.
Now, almost a decade later, I've had to opportunity to recieve feedback from editors, teachers and friends, participate in various training venues, and the opportunity to shoot a seemingly countless numbers of pictures. All of these elements have played major roles in my growth and development as a photographer. Improving my photo gear (including multiple DSLR’s and various studio lights / equipment) didn’t hurt either.
While I thoroughly enjoy the quick and unpredictable nature of photojournalism and street photography, the technical and artistic challenges present in studio or planned shoots helps to balance my perception and view of the world as seen through a camera. In addition to experienced models, I also enjoy working with newer models (or individuals/couples/small groups who wouldn’t consider themselves “model material”) who are not set in their ways, are maybe a little awkward in their mannerisms in front of the camera, and are simply enjoying the feeling of looking their best. I have found that this combination, more often than not, produces results that surprise and delight those I work with.
Photography has afforded me the opportunity to share those moments in time that no one else had a chance to experience. It allows me to tell a story and to appreciate the subtle things that mostly go unnoticed. In the end my goal is to capture the beauty, passion and energy in what I see.
