ARTIST STATEMENT

"I could feel myself falling asleep – my thoughts turning into pictures – and the pictures forming a story – my dream."

I am interested in places; subjects and their environment that resonate from paradoxical moments in time – illusory places that are in the midst of change, yet for a moment, remain still. I am seduced by this translucent and symmetrical, highly organized plane. My photographs are not a substitute for the reality of a particular place; it’s only a matter of time and position. In relation to the surface, I hope that my photographs will uncover a new place.

Art exposes an unrestricted sketch of dreams, an unrelenting source of material imagination. The elusive nature of photography is the best way for me to understand and comment upon a world that hides more than it reveals. With my camera, I want to see a world that I see when my eyes are closed; with a photograph, I am reminded.

EXPERIENCE

Currently in conjunction with my fine art photography career, I founded Fladzinski Photograph & Design in May 2005, a commercial photography studio in San Francisco with much of my workflow concentrated upon architectural, advertising and fashion photography. I also employ my experience offering lessons and workshops to individuals to satisfy a number of photographic needs ranging from basic 35mm film camera and advanced digital SLR operation to one on one critiques. As a professional photographer, my responsibilities include location photography, digital image editing, client communication, contract negotiation, advertising and marketing my services including designing and maintaining my website, direct mailing, writing press releases, etc.

I have over three years of university teaching experience with demonstrated ability to work with individuals of diverse age, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds and learning abilities. Summer 2004, as a position of lecturer, I taught a summer session beginning drawing class at the University of California, Davis. In the fall of 2003, as an assistant instructor, I was selected to teach the same class, beginning drawing. During graduate school, I was selected as a teacher’s assistant for five terms under the professorships of Hannah Collins (photographer / filmmaker), Mark Van Proyen (inter-media artist) and Hisham Bizri (filmmaker / philosopher). The classes that I have teacher assisted for include beginning and advanced photography, inter-media printmaking and documentary film. My responsibilities as a lecturer, assistant instructor and teachers assistant include planning course syllabus and projects, lecturing, directing critiques, grading, preparing slide presentations, organizing technical workshops and collaborative projects, preparing annual budgetary darkroom and lab expenditures, selecting student work for exhibitions, purchasing class and darkroom materials, planning field trips, etc.
