Hi. I'm Ed.

Currently mostly shooting a Mamiya 645 Pro and a Nikon F3, usually Illford Delta 100 or Fuji Velvia. Currently loving landscapes and art nude images.

I also have a more scientific academic interest in photography. My PhD is in Single Photon Avalanche Diode Arrays (SPADa) in conventional CMOS (mostly the 180nm and 130nm AMS processes). In particular quenching and readout circuit design for the new generation of small 2-3um SPADs in advanced technologies. Currently interested in event driven readout and dynamic memory storage. Also looking into time correlated detection for 3D information and scalable devices for large +1Mp arrays.
Also looking into high bandwidth optical receivers for the Hypix grant, probably a parallel system with 8Gb/s per pixel, but larger at 100um square.

My MEng research thesis was based at ST Microelectronics Imaging Division investigating Histogram based exposure control techniques and algorithms. The work also incorporated information theory and human psychology. I went into a lot of detail about how the camera OECF curve distorts image statistics but gives a more appealing image.

My 3rd year placement involved writing parsing software for unknown RAW images using Python, C and C++. Mainly for a GUI and algorithms for byte depth, horizontal and vertical correlation and colour space detection.

My CV can be found on my website if you are interested in my academic interests.

My research department at Edinburgh University is the Institute of Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS):

"Ed has some amazing shots on his Flickr stream. His photoshoots with models are great and normally involve girls with bright red hair (which I love). I love coming back to his stream to check for updates."
