I majored in photography at the Art Institute of Boston for two years then went on to earn a degree in interior design specializing in commercial projects. I enjoyed studying many forms of art and design while in school.

While living in Boston for 10 years I worked at a number of architectural and interior design firms around the city. During this time my artistic hobbies varied. I would loose interest after a few projects and move on to something else, but I have always loved creating something!

I had the chance to travel abroad a number of times in 2002-2005 which rekindled my passion for photography. In 2004 I acquire a digital camera and I have been captivated ever since!

The opportunity for me to live in Kyiv, Ukraine for 6 months presented its self in 2004-2005 where I had many opportunities to photograph and write about my experiences, including the time of the “Orange Revolution” and inauguration of President Youshchenko. My passion for photography was rekindled and I have been very focused on it ever since.

I am a prolific photographer. My interest in what I photograph varies extensively. I’ve always loved architectural and cityscapes. Lately I’ve been photographing more landscapes at sunrise or sunset. I get excited in the late afternoon when the sunlight has a warm color and creates long, soft shadows that bring out texture and accentuate the contours of landscapes. In the morning, I watch the light, waiting for it to illuminate just the right flowers covered in dew drops or rays of light that break through the mist on a lake or river exposing a reflection in the water. Photographing waterfowl is really fun as well. I love to capture the antics of these birds!

I am also passionate about photographing flowers close-up. Being able to see things you can’t see with the naked eye is so exciting! I frequently use studio lights which work wonderfully to create soft, even light and are great for the occasional still life images I create.

I love vibrant colors and bold shapes, which is probably why I photograph flowers, architecture and landscapes with dramatic lighting.

Digital art is something I’ve been doing more of recently. I’ve been experimenting with layering flowers on textured backgrounds. I loved the contrast of the soft, delicate flower with an object with a rough surface. This gave it a wonderful painterly quality. In these images, I have combined the beauty of nature with something mundane. The wonderful texture brings a new element of interest to these images. I am also experimenting with this technique with some of my landscapes.

    Lynn Fagerlie says:

"Elyssa’s photostream is a joy to view. Her passion for photography comes through in every image. One of the things I admire most about Elyssa is her obvious desire to grow, learn and improve on her already amazing talent. She is constantly trying new things, and whether she is shooting outside to capture some of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen, or shooting in her own home studio, I am always excited to see the new heights she reaches with her photography. Her photostream is alive with color and beauty, and I always enjoy stopping by."
