My first camera was a dinky little quarter frame that produced only grainy pictures, so I got a black body Olympus OM1 that accompanied me on 15 expeditions. On my first expedition to the Arctic, I also took both the OM 1 and a Nikon FM2. You just can't take a bad picture with that setup.

In the early days, I worked with B&W, finding some great images, such as a dozen dead Christmas turkeys hanging in an alley outside a Cumbrian butcher's shop, a lone bicycle lying sideways in an Oxford street rack, its front wheel bent in half. Or the black engineer's face peeking through a frosted window of a passing train, a small herd of cows looking down from their Devon meadow as I kayaked past.

Then I got the Ektachrome bug, and created images as I travelled the Alps, crossed deserts, wandered the Himalayas and stared into the throngs of humanity coursing though cities. But how to choose just one, when all are redolent with nostalgia; magical, moving moments that shaped my life?

Here are some that continue to shape my journey.
