"Photography helps people to see."
-- Berenice Abbott

I am happier when I see the world through the eyes of a photographer. Colors and patterns appear that would otherwise be overlooked.

I enjoy looking at my town of Portland, Oregon as if I am on vacation.

My advice to the photographer: "Be on the lookout for pleasing patterns and colors that are all around us but go unnoticed by non-photographers. Take the photo. Decide later if you want to share it. Make modifications to see the results. Your life will be richer and so will the lives of those you share your vision with." It really helps to have a digital camera so you don't overlook shots due to the price of film and development.

I have been using an 8-megapixel digital camera for four years and have found that it transforms my photography. I am moving up to a new Nikon 10 Mp pocket camera and a 12.2 Mp serious Nikon D300 DSLR. High resolution of these cameras allow me to crop down a photo to dramatically improve it. I am able to take as many pictures as I want, knowing that I can delete the duds and that the photos are essentially free. In deciding to keep a shot or delete it, I refer to the next two paragraphs.

It seems to me that photos are taken either to (a) document a trip or event, or (b) to show something beautiful or interesting. Photos of family and friends are probably not the best use of public postings on Flickr.

The best book on photographic composition I've read is "Masterclass in Photography" by Michael and Julien Busselle. "The qualaties that make a good photograph are shape, form, texture, pattern, perspective, and color."
