The Psycho-Plaid Collection
![]()
Statement
I'm sitting in front of the Centre for Le Corbusier in Zürich on New Year's Eve a few years ago wondering why he chose that particular composition of the windows. At the time I had hooked up MATLAB to Photoshop and was generating visuals based on algorithmic combinatoric iterations... and I wondered if I could do the same with aesthetic combinatorics. With that in mind, one of the algorithms I've fallen in love with lately – which helps me generate a style that I'm calling Psycho-Plaid. The results prompted me to put them into a collection and then upload it online recently, which can be viewed here. The designs are not dormant, though, and have a desire to jump from the screen and live on textiles, stained glass, ceramics, house decor, etc., etc., and thanks to the fact that they are resolution independent and I can sculpt them with code, coaxing them to shift the structure of their format to accommodate a wide range of file formats, doing so will be relatively easy.
Desired Product List
Here’s a short list of products I would like to license my designs for sophisticated and high-quality: bags, bedding, blinds, cabinetry, car wraps, cloth napkins, comforters, curtains, cushions, doors, duvet covers, dish towels, embroidery, fabrics, frescos, furniture, hand fans, jewelry, lampshades, molds (for glass, ceramic, porcelain or metal sculptures ), murals, pillows, pillowcases, rugs, scarves, sheets, stamps (rubber, candle), stoneware (dinnerware sets, cookware, etc), stencils, table runners, table place-mats, tiles (glass, mosaic, ceramic), throws, umbrellas (paper), upholstery, wallpaper, wall hangings, window (shades, drapes).
Bio
Dr. Woohoo (translation: Serious Fun), is a New Mexico based artist, developer and lecturer creating work for a wide range of clients, including Adobe, Taylormade-Adidas Golf, Nike Golf and Camelbak. Working with digital media since 1993, Woohoo's professional projects are available at www.drwoohoo.com and at Dr. Woohoo on Flickr.
Woohoo's projects typically flow from the abstract to the practical. To generate his artwork, he cyclically moves between creating his own color and brush applications and plug-ins that attempt to capture his emotions and artistic vision, while emulating natural media. Woohoo's artwork can be found online, on tv, prints, canvas, silk chiffon kimonos and scarves, as kinetic sculptures and soon as ceramic and glass mosaic tiles. As a simple rule, he chooses to integrate rather than duplicate features that already exist in the creative applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Maya and Painter) that he uses. This à la carte approach allows Woohoo to mix-n-match any feature from these applications along with his own bag of tricks and sculpt them into his own set of über-creative application(s). From a creative perspective, this allows him to extend his creative capabilities. From a practical perspective, it turns out that the processes and tools created for Generative Art are a perfect match for automating and adding to the intelligence of the creative process and workflow – giving the designer an infinite amount of possibilities, while focusing in on variations that are relevant to that designers preferences.
Woohoo has won over 50 awards – all of which he has recycled with a smile on his face and liberation in his heart. He has/will exhibit(ed) his work and/or was a speaker at:
