My first experience behind a camera was taking control of my parents film camera at family outings. It often came to be that thirty-six shots was not enough to keep me entertained. With film and processing costs, they felt it would be cheaper in the long run to get me a digital camera.

The Fujifilm MX-2900 was to be my first digital camera and cast me as “that weird guy in high-school who always had a camera on him”. Over the next few years I was to take countless shots with this little 2.3 megapixel beast. Many of them were lost over the years, a lot were deleted on purpose as I was far from skilful. But damn I had fun with that camera. Eventually I felt it was finally time to upgrade.

While I was far from being any sort of expert, or even an amateur. I still decided to take the jump to a DSLR. The Canon EOS 350D was my next camera. This purchase further labeled me amongst my friends as “the guy with the camera nobody can figure out”. Now this camera had quite a learning curve. Not because it was difficult, but simply because I was now playing with photographic concepts that I had little to no idea of. I was in effect, jumping in at the deep end. And while I still have many bad photos that never see the light of day, I like to think that I’ve learnt from many of my mistakes over the years with this camera, and feel that I’ve come out with a fair few great that I simply must share – and have done so over the years with the photo gallery at this site, and recently with the availability of some photos for purchase at RedBubble

Now we move into current times. Just before New Years, I decided to upgrade my trusty 350D. Not because it was out of date, or no longer useful. Instead I simply felt that it was time to push myself a little further. With a “semi-professional” camera – the Canon EOS 50D. And while a camera itself doesn’t add to a photographers skill or abilities, I have felt that recently my work has improved dramatically – and I hope you see that too.
