DoDEA, established shortly after the end of World War II, is a field activity of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. It is headed by a director who oversees all agency functions from DoDEA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. DoDEA’s primary mission is to plan, direct, coordinate, and manage the education programs for eligible dependents of U.S. military personnel and civilian personnel of the Department of Defense (DoD) stationed overseas. DoDEA operates more than 200 schools in Europe, the Pacific and the United States, serving more than 87,000 children of active duty military and civilian employees.
