I have been into photography since I was about 9 (my father was) when I taught myself photography with Modern Photography (RIP - you are missed!) and Popular Photography magazine. I used an old Kodak 35 (manual focus by means of estimating distance scale, manual shutter, manual aperture, don't forget to wind or can you say "multiple exposures", no meter) and later got a Canon FTb SLR (later AE-1, T70). Collected antique cameras (had about 800, but they were lost in a flood! ) when I was younger. Got out of it because of cost of film and developing. My wife got me back into it because she knew how much I used to do it. Bought a Rebel XT and now back in. I found out about the ability to use adapters on it with old lenses and have a collection of old manual lenses that I used most of the time instead of AF/auto lenses. I have since changed to a Canon 20D, my wife Mary-Ann now uses an Rebel XTi. I have a Canon 10D as a backup body as well. Back to the 10D as my 20D has flipped out. Have an Olympus E20n also (cost me $35) and love it as a secondary, macros (smaller sensor - more DOF), and street as it is totally silent. Now have a Canon 7D - totally amazing!
