Devon Lawrence is a Hampton Roads native and the creator of the iconic Crack Babies. The Crack Babies were born in a VCU classroom, after his professor warned him to not illustrate any images with guns or images that degrade women. Being stereotyped in front of his peers sparked the creation of the first Crack Baby. As of late, the Crack Babies represent the struggles that this artist has been forced to endure. The artist has been battling a rare Autoimmune disease since 2004. In the process of trying to go into remission, medications have damaged his body as well. However, this obstacle has failed to stop him from creating art. In fact, his desire to create art is stronger now than it was before his illness developed. His work is created through pain and discomfort that many people can’t comprehend. Every piece that he creates is an amazing accomplishment under the current circumstances. The Crack Babies not only represent the artist, but all of us. In some shape or form, we're all broken. Mentally or phsyically. We're broken, but not defeated.
