Early American historian, heathen Catholic, beach bum and bad clawhammer banjo player. My favorite thing to do is head out on a road trip, as getting there is half the fun and you're free to eat tasty food that is really bad for you. In particular, I am always on the lookout for good barbeque joints. My absolute favorite place is North Carolina's Outer Banks. I spent most of my childhood roaming the beaches and swamps of southern Virginia, so I feel very comfortable wherever there is water. I'm a bit of a Confederate Yankee. Although my father's family came to North Carolina in the 1680s, my mother's family is from New England and that's where I was born. It's often a love-hate relationship, but I really don't think I could live anywhere else but the South.
