Hi there, Jake Howard here, to tell you a little about myself, and how I arrived at making my living from my fantastic metal wall art / sculptures.
I was born in Kingston upon Thames in the sixties and then spent the earlier part of my life in and around the London area, undertaking various jobs, most of which centered on the manipulation and marrying together of metals. A fascinating subject in my opinion!
Welding came naturally to me so it would be foolish of me not to use my talent to derive an income. The usual sort of jobs that you get welding were OK but I like to do things that are a little specialized in some way, as I consider myself to be a bit of a perfectionist, if there is such a thing as 'a bit of a perfectionist' and I have a keen eye. When I am welding a seem along two pieces of metal there is a certain affinity between myself and the molten metal in front of my eyes, its as if we become one, merging together, its such a fine line between a good weld and burning right through the materials you are working with. There is a certain satisfaction to be derived from welding two different pieces of metal together and you not knowing that there was ever a join there.
London’s pace of life got very hectic for me and I loathed the fact that I would have to spend a good portion of my day commuting to and fro from my work spending hours stuck in traffic jams, so I decide it was time for a move. I had family in Devon so headed that way for a break. I was so inspired by the awesome energy of the coast that I found it hard to leave so made my home there.
I spent a few years working for a local fabrication company, but felt that something was missing from my life. I had always enjoyed drawing and art in general and started to experiment with turning my ideas and drawings into actual 3 dimensional shapes, this was when I realized that it was creativity that was missing from my life. Trying to make an income from something that I enjoyed, I started to advertise my work and that is when I realized that it isn’t just me that likes what I do, people want to buy my creations and hang them in there own personal spaces. What higher accolade could a budding artist and perfectionist hope to achieve, so that is what I do now, I make beautiful quality, stunning artworks, from metal.
Hopefully people will continue to appreciate my artwork for many years to come and if there is an antiques road show in the next centaury, then I want my artwork to be featuring on there. Hope you enjoy taking a look. Thanks for reading my profile Jake Howard ArtsApart.
