Hi
I'm a returned SLR shooter who first started photography by borrowing my father's super box camera. Later progressing to borrowing his half frame Olympus 35mm and then with my own Agfa 127 and Zenith SLR. Awesome manual everything Russian SLR with great sharp focussing lens. Eventually I inherited an OM1 and bought a third party zoom which was heavy but sharp. When we relocated to Australia in 1991 I found film processing costs here much higher than the UK and that and life got in the way of photography. Also when digital came in it was pricey and shutter lag was a real pain. However the Fuji S3000 took some great pictures, some of which are still on the walls here! Dust killed the S3000 or rather I couldn't accept the result of dust on the sensor and this combined with an array of puzzling choices in entry level DSLRs meant I bought a Canon super zoom as a stop gap.
I took it to NYC and thought I'd buy something when I got there in the DSLR line. However I bought a fish-eye adapter for the Canon and went home with great stills and good avi movies - stereo sound included, stereo is a real bonus for the sort of things I video, cop cars in NYC and trains everywhere else!
Next year I bought a Nikon D40 on sale ahead of trip to Japan and the wife used the Canon. I still have the D40 which feels a bit under resolved vs the Canon 6:8 mpegs however moving up hasn't happened yet but....D90 or D300s it should be, lens wise, but once again there is an overwhelming choice of good stuff and if I didn't have 6, no 7 Nikon mount lenses a change of brand could, maybe even will happen.
I like the Pentax K-x, colours especially and in camera distortion fixing, and the Canon 7D is ....then again the Panasonic Lumix range especially the new TZ10 pocket....and no doubt as soon as I buy a D90 Nikon will update it - adding stereo sound to movie mode maybe and a flip-out screen like the Canon S5IS we have and love. My pocket Canon A590 died on me or rather the lens got stuck so........ and that image wise was very near the S5IS though not a rugged it seems!
