Artist Bio:
David Alan Pattison first connected with ceramic art through the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and it’s many influential Master Ceramic Artists such as Dave Shaner, Ken Ferguson, Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio. These Master Clay Artists inspired David’s life long love of ceramic art and he followed that muse by studying art at: Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio; The University of Montana where he received a BFA degree; and further study at The University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
With other college degrees in Social Work and Business Administration, most of David’s employment has been in the field of Human Services. When the opportunity arises he enjoys sharing his love of ceramics through instruction. He taught art in Bethel, Alaska in the Junior and Senior High School as well as ceramics at the Kuskokwim Community College.
His work is shown locally in the Olympia area and regionally. Pieces have been accepted into juried art shows through the Olympia Art League, and the South Puget Sound Community College annual juried art show.
David’s work is considered to be competitive in the arena of contemporary ceramic sculpture.
------------------------
I live in Olympia, Washington. The art works here represent my art interest over many years.
I make poetic gestural objects.
My work emphasizes the importance of the act of creating as much as the finished art object. I rely on improvisation rather than detailed, previously-drawn-up plans to construct my art -- working within the moment and responding to the clay in a kind of dialogue as it changes under my hands.
I worked for years in social services. After I came back from Alaska, I have gradually gotten more interested in my clay art -- so I am trying to make things again. I have been very occupied with some work related injuries and find my art to be therapeutic at this time and not financially rewarding in that I have not been selling anything or winning financial awards for my art, or teaching.
Nearly everthing I have made is still in the process of being finished to my satisfaction.
I sometimes share my studio space as I have a little extra work space I often share with a few friends. I don't charge except for the cost of electricity they use.
I also like helping people, just hanging out and enjoying life.
Lately, I like to "hand build" fairly big pieces that are hollow. It takes a long time to make each one and I sometimes need help moving them around the studio.
