I’m a photographer of wildlife and travel from New Zealand living in London where I work in an artwork studio by day. I arrived in late 1989 for a six month journey and I’m still here journeying twenty years later.

Some favourite and oft-visited places currently are Richmond Park in England, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Namibia and soon to be India, Botswana, Kenya again, and Zambia for 2010. Somewhere, I’m going to have to fit New Zealand in too.

I have two eyes, one’s for color, the other’s for black and white, because I like each equally. If you’re going to take successful pictures of wild things, you need to have in order of importance: knowledge of your subject, preparation, a good sense of picture, a good camera. I need to work more on the first one.

Someone once remarked to me the pointlessness of hiding pictures on computers after taking them. I did this for a long time. Then I used my other skills to make a website to show them to other people here.

I’m using a Nikon D3s and a D300 with:
12-24 f/4.0
85 f/1.4
70-200 f/2.8
300 f/4.0
200-400 f/4.0
1.4 and 1.7 teleconverters

I also have a nice pocketable Panasonic LX3, which quite ironically has been the source of my only National Geographic picture to date.

Possibly the best tip I can suggest is to stay with your subject for as long as possible.
