In 2008 DASH began a pioneering visual arts programme to increase the number of Disabled and Deaf artists working with mainstream galleries. Between 2009 and 2011 three artists were commissioned; Sean Burn, Disabled Avant Garde and Noemi Lakmaier, by The New Art Gallery Walsall, Oriel Davies - Mid Wales and Wolverhampton Art Gallery respectively. The pilot phase of this project was a great success and cluminated in a symposium in December 2011 called Defying Definitions at the Arena Theatre.

For further information on the programme please go to www.dasharts.org/in/news.jsp

The wider phase of the programme is now gathering momentum and has been given the name IN, recognising that the programme is moving into the gallery spaces and that Disability Arts is no longer seen as an outside artform.

The partner galleries for 2012 – 2015 are:

the mac – Birmingham
The Herbert – Coventry
The Public – West Bromwich
Arnolfini – Bristol
Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery – Shrewsbury

Each gallery has it’s own ideas on how they will approach this project, all of which are very exciting!

DASH is proud to be working with these organisations and flying the flag for Disability Arts. I hope you will join in with this exciting project and if you are a Disabled or Deaf Artist, or an organisation that would like to find out more please get in touch.

We still have lots of work to do ‘behind the scenes’, ironing out timetables and all the administrative tasks, not to mention getting six organisations diaries together.

More information will be coming out just as soon as we can get it to you.

Please contribute your photos to this project as a response to work you have seen, as part of the work you would like to see, or disability arts work of your own. Or just look though and enjoy the gallery.
