cyanatic's photostream
|
Steve Gubin is a photographer who has recently returned to his hometown of Chicago after a 30 year residency in San Diego. His work has appeared in a number of print and online publications and has been exhibited at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the Marquis Annex, the Skyline Gallery, and the Center for Fine Art Photography. With the exception of his “The Street as Graphic Novel” series, he prefers to do as little post-processing as possible, utilizing Adobe Lightroom for black and white conversion and traditional dark room adjustments. He received a BA in Journalism from California State University, Northridge.
"Although most contemporary photographers are influenced by those who came before them, we must eventually find our own way, our own moments, our own place. I look for the light, the personality, the posture, or the moment that shows the transcendant, the slightly surreal, in the everyday. Some of the photographers who have influenced my work are Eugene Atget,, Robert Frank, and Yasuhiro Mishimoto."
"Although my flickr photostream contains some of my better photographs, I post here primarily for the fun of it.. A finer distillation of my "more serious" work can be found at my website address shown below:"

"It's raw and he shows exactly what is what. There isn't any frills or distractions in the way. Just a purity that few photographers truly "get" or can possibly understand. A true artist and awesome photog."

Pachelbel Canon says:
"I first became aware of Steve’s work with his incredible, luminous HDR images. I promptly obtained HDR software and Steve, without knowing it, became my tutor, although I never became his equal. Later Steve turned more to b/w images, and he is clearly also a master at these as well.
Steve does not concentrate on any of those areas apt to evoke inclusion in Explore: macros of flowers or insects, or landscapes, or Photoshopped constructions, or “cute.” His focus, insofar as there is one in particular, is the city of San Diego. Not just the beautiful beaches and similar tourist-fodder, but the nitty-gritty of the city itself, such as the lively community of Hillcrest and downtown. Steve has become what amounts to the photo-laureate of San Diego, and his photostream contains material enough for one or more books.
But there’s a lot more in Steve’s work than just San Diego. To name a few, there are glorious nightscapes and remarkable still lifes, such as his memorable seashell, a fire hydrant, and, yes, even a couple of deceased opossums. He has made such extraordinary images of the Royal Food Mart that they should give him free groceries (perhaps they do). And all is enlivened by a lovely humor: the opossums, a tongue-in-cheek pepper homage to Weston, and of course the unforgettable Cousin Ilya, to name a few.
Steve is one of those rare and fortunate photographers who sees the photograph standing out from its surroundings long before he picks up his camera. Explore his photostream for a truly delightful experience and for valuable lessons in the art of photography."25th October, 2007

"This testimonial is long past due. Cyanatic's photography is eclectic and unstylized. There is no theme, no processing, and no stamp that a photo would have been taken by him. Many would consider that a failing, and many would be dead wrong. To me it means he removes his ego from the equation of capturing the world around him and reveals the enviable metathemes of childlike wonder, adaptability, and perspicacity. It is obvious he loves the world in all its variability and feels no need to shove it into pretentious "artistic" compositions or techniques."

"When I miss living in San Diego, I always go to Steve's page and remember how beautiful and unique that city is. His eye for capturing "the moment" is wonderful and his use of color just simply tremendous!"

Damgaard, (TheObsessivePhotographer.com) says:
"If you are reading this you already know Cyanatic is a talented photographer. Laughingly he says in his profile he has only recently gotten into photography. I say laughingly since I believe photography isn't something just anyone can simply "get into".
Photography is more than the name suggests. Anyone can capture a relatively true "image" with today's technologically enhanced equipment. You can point and shoot even the most expensive digital SLR.
The true mark of a photographer is capturing a "moment", an "emotion", a "mood".
Cyanatic could do this with a disposable camera with the clack, clack, clack sound in between shots.
When he has new shots I always look at them. When he doesn't I wonder where he is. He's a great addition to this community!"25th February, 2007

SkyShaper says:
" Maybe it's those green mirrored lenses he peers thru ( see buddy icon ) or the mind behind those eyes. Steve's world is a world of color, shadow and light. There are colors in the normal spectrum, and then there are Cyanatic colors. And what a pallette he owns. He shoots photos as if he were painting. Rich tapestries of light and form. His night shots are rich images that take you in. His HDR's can teach the best of us on it's proper use. Never overdone always amazing. He works with available light as if he can bend it and work it the way he needs. Magic and beauty describe his work......buddy, it's been a gift knowing you and absorbing your work. - SkyShaper"

"My friend Cyanatic/Steve is my first contact in Flickr. Personally, Steve is a warm person whom I feel at ease to communicate and discuss any topic at any time of the day.
Cautious, polite, tedious and precise - All of these qualities are effortlessly transferred into his photography. the clean and precise qualities are evident in his work - He plans his work, precisely executes and practices diligently, At any available moment.
The depth of his background research is astounding. His impressive acquisition of knowledge is astonishing. The qualities he had acquired through arts and acting....I presumed?
The most I admire about Steve is his honesty, Yes he is "the real deal" and will be my friend and preferred photographer on Flickr................infinity."26th December, 2006

"Whenever I visit Cyanatic's set I am confronted with absolute honesty; freeze-frame moments depicting rarely appreciated beauty, moments bathed in shadow and some flooded with brilliance and color. It's evident that he appreciates and celebrates life from every conceivable angle and with the restless eye of an artist in the tradition of Rembrandt. A "frustrated painter"? Yes. "An average joe with a camera"? Absolutely Not. In my book, he is the Real Deal, one of the rare, authentic masterpieces of the human race."
