Statement:
Since 1998 I have chosen to become acquainted with the lesser known, the eccentric, the creative, the misunderstood, the marginal, and the disappearing as well as emerging cultures, communities, and individuals in our world.
As a visual documentarian I prefer to observe a culture from within looking inward through patience, networking, social integration, and earning the trust and respect of my host community. I photograph my subjects through a lens that honors a people's unique identity while also revealing their inner beauty and vulnerabilities as well as their similarities to and differences from global culture. But more importantly, I seek to affirm my subject's humanity. Concurrently, as a fine artist, I endeavor to make use of the resources available to me while engaging in a process of conceptual play and discovery with my subject and the physical circumstance. For both approaches I seek to visually understand the ambition, the disposition, and the motivation of the person(s) who I chronicle, especially while in the context of a location that has a historical dimension while communicating a sense of meaning and place.
My personal mission, however, is to one day recognize that which connects each of us to ourselves, each other, all that is living and inanimate in nature, and that which is the great unknown. Both during and after my time while alive on earth, I hope that my work will serve to inspire each succeeding generation to further realize our enlightened potential as a sentient and evolved species.

A Dedication...
Though this gallery includes many images that look back to and share experiences I had in San Francisco, at Burning Man, and other places, my gallery is first and foremost dedicated to the people of New Orleans.
My heartfelt sentiments go out to those who have, since its inception, endured servitude, negligence, corruption, exploitation, and gentrification... having to fight for their cultural identity and civil rights in the face of the moral crusade, political indifference, cultural homogeneity, and economic imperialism... not to mention having survived the greatest natural disaster and political failure in the history of the United States. I, however, reserve a special place in my heart for those who have supported my efforts and endeavors while also befriending me, even during my own times of duress and need.

Short Bio:
Since 1998 - while having lived in and between San Francisco, New Orleans, and Washington D.C. - I have pursued photography with a passion and a flare for creative composition and historical tenor. Though I started out with the intent of becoming a National Geographic and Smithsonian photographer, I have since found my visual voice through documentary photography, photojournalism, conceptual and fine art imagery, portraiture, band and performance photography, and photographic activism.
To date, I have been both self-directed and motivated by a sense of purpose. As a result, I am deeply invested in my subjects, my experiences, and the quality of my work: having embarked on an extensive exploration of Burning Man culture in the early 2000s, assembling an intimate portrait of the cross-section of creatives and eccentrics who urban underground communities, and immersing myself in a three-year plus chronicle of New Orleans and its residents, who have, on their own, succeeded in overcoming many of the challenges following the devastation visited upon them by Hurricane Katrina.
Thus far, my images have been published in The Village Voice and Lenswork Magazine, my prints have been purchased for the permanent collections of The Louisiana State Museum and The Historic New Orleans' Collection, my journalistic ethic has been appreciated by faculty from universities such as Columbia and Stanford, my activist fervor has been recognized by The Institute For Southern Studies and the German Parliament, and my talents commissioned by the likes of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Burning Man, LLC.
In an effort to publish the first of my many books from the past eleven years on queue, I am beginning the process by editing the many thousands of images I have acquired from my New Orleans experience while developing my professional network.

THIS GALLERY'S PURPOSE:
WITH REGARD TO NEW ORLEANS...
••• The working title of this visual thesis is, "Forsaken... Not Forgotten".
••• To provide an honest and intimate portrait of New Orleans and its inhabitants since Hurricane Katrina and the Great Flood.
••• To share my understanding of New Orleans at this time through an open-minded and participatory approach, so as to chronicle and report far beyond the myopic portrayal of the media.
••• This visual thesis is executed with special attention given to the on-going physical, social, and economic struggles, as well as the unique culture and enduring spirit of the New Orleans' inhabitant, especially in a country that has all but forgotten the value of heritage, cultural diversity, ritual, ceremony, tradition, and creative living.
WITH REGARD TO DOCUMENTARY IMAGERY...
••• To provoke thought, feeling, and action from the viewer so that it may result in positive change.
••• To encourage a worldwide cross-cultural dialogue through presenting powerful imagery and thoughtful commentary regarding the myriad of social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental issues that challenge humanity and our planet in the 21st-Century.
••• This gallery explores the beauty, the suffering, and the enduring spirit of the human species so as to increase both social- and self-awareness, and inform the collective conscience.
••• To visually interpret regional culture and subculture in an effort to promote understanding, the diversity of human expression, our connection to each other and our environment.
••• To explore the remnants of traditional culture within regional and ethnic communities that struggle to maintain their identity in the face of economic imperialism.
••• To chronicle the growing number of communities who strive to create new forms of cultural identity and expression in the face of a society stripped of purpose and identity.
••• To encourage an understanding of the easily dismissed or misunderstood.
WITH REGARD TO PORTRAITURE, PERFORMANCE, AND FINE ART IMAGERY...
••• To photograph each person with their dignity and humanity in-tact.
••• To capture the often overlooked ephemera within a pre-existing context that will encourage the viewer to be reflective and consider different possibilities.
••• To celebrate those who are self-directed, radically expressive, unapologetically individual, socially conscious, thoughtful, visionary, honest, authentic, fearless, provocative, adventurous, playful, creative, cooperative, empathetic, compassionate and curious who embrace truth and wisdom as their guiding light.
••• To shake-up and inspire the many who sleepwalk through life, who follow an unconscious routine, who subscribe to social prescriptions, and/or who allow others to make decisions and take responsibility for them.
WITH REGARD TO NUDE PORTRAITURE...
••• To recognize that in all of its manifestations the human body is visually complex and emotionally alluring. And that throughout history artwork of the nude human form has attracted more attention, both good and bad, by the average person than any other type of art.
••• To photograph each person in the nude with consideration to their dignity and humanity. However, in this instance, an image is captured through the filter of form, texture, beauty, sensuality, and/or the mysticism within a mythological, archetypal, historical, egoic, and/or socially provocative context.
••• To present sensuality and sexuality as both transcendental art and raw humanity.
WITH REGARD TO MY PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL AGENDA...
••• I am on a self-directed mission to bring my interpretation of truth and beauty - through the filters of acute awareness, cognizant intuition, creative vision, and a sense of connectedness - to the people of the world in an effort to affect, inspire, and move, to provoke questions, dialogue, and ultimately change.
••• I seek to challenge myself and improve upon my talents and skills as an artist and documentarian through experiencing different ways of seeing, being, and engaging the world.
••• I wish to travel the world to ally myself to and befriend like-minded individuals - be they creative, social, scientific, and spiritual visionaries - who seek to find ways to live peaceably together and in cooperation with our planet.
••• I wish to continue to learn about how to accurately yet artfully communicate a visual story with respect paid to different cultural and individual points-of-view.
••• Though I enjoy creative collaboration and thoughtful input, because I do not subscribe to the mainstream art and media's propensity toward censorship, propaganda, sensationalism, and dumbing down in order to benefit the capital agenda of monied interests, I will continue to document my experience and the people/communities who are of interest me without restrictions or agendas imposed by editors, patrons, and/or special interests.
••• I wish to be respected as both an artist and documentarian, published in a variety of media, and exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.” --- Aaron Siskind

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” --- Albert Einstein
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
THE MISSION OF CULTURE:SUBCULTURE
••• To be invited to observe, photographically interpret, and share my observations and experiences with people who are receptive to not only appreciating beauty, but also diversity, human suffering, the enduring spirit, and the strange.
••• To facilitate the process of learning about one's self and and our connection to each another.
••• To document the struggle of long extant cultures who attempt to maintain their heritage and cultural identity, while concurrently, communities of like-minded individuals attempt to create a cultural context with purpose and distinction in a world overpopulated by people who subscribe to conformity and uniformity.
••• To explore a myriad of places and cultures in an effort to nurture an understanding of society and self.
••• To promote awareness, dialogue, diplomacy, self-expression, alliance, community, and self-realization within a democratic framework.
••• To inspire honesty, authenticity, and responsibility to ourselves and one another.

WHY THE VOICE OF EYE?
The alias I've adopted is a modification of the name of one of my all time favorite experimental noise and dark ambient groups, Voice of Eye. Being that the name resonated with the way that I both experience and interpret the world, and the separate musicians had moved onto other projects, I decided to keep the name alive.
However recently, by sheer coincidence, Ure Thrall, who is a friend of one of my dearest friends, and a one time co-collaborator with Voice of Eye, informed me that, after over a decade of inactivity, VOE will again come together in October of 2008 for an international ambient music event entitled "I Am In Dust" (http://www.iamindust.com), located in Oakland, California.
As strange as the story of my life has been, it's about to get stranger, because I will be the photographer for this event.

Mischievous Miss A says:
"Craig can see people but he can see further than many photographers on Flickr. When you visit his world you see wonderful and real glimpses of how people live. That's special and it's very rare. Here is the work of a true humanist, and it's brilliant work as far as I'm concerned"

He has a good eye to describe through his photos the small and great moments that happens in one's life. I really have enjoyed his photography from the first time I have had the chance to look out his work. Keep it up Craig!:)"

"Craig is a self-taught genius and it is just a matter of time before his talent at documenting the less traveled paths of American culture is recognized as a national treasure for both artistic and historical reasons. I was lucky enough to watch him photograph one night in the French Quarter and it was an amazing and humbling experience. Craig knows both how to approach subjects openly and how to photograph in an unobtrusive manner. He is methodical, thoughtful, diligent, and a perfectionist . His talent for unusual compositions is unmatched. Perhaps the most important lessons I learned from Craig were derived from observing his generosity to the down-and-out and listening to him explain his respect for those he photographs."

"This is serious ethnographic documentary that is clearly captured with sensitivity and a fundamental interest in people and their ways of life. In this sense, the images are art but social science at the same time. Photographers like Craig make photography relevant to the world in which we all live together. This spreads love and concern; ultimate peaks for a dream of togetherness in a human diversity worth striving for in the 21st Century."

"An obvious talent to show us the theater of life and its perpetual
circus. Peoples in Graig's pictures are funny or tragic sometimes both at the same time but especially they are true.
Merci à toi Graig"14th March, 2007

"World is spinning around as the time goes by…. We acquire different skills, experience but our personality never changes…. I think that we all are expressing our personalities through our pictures thus delivering our thoughts and points of view to others. “World through black and white” is what Graig’s photostream composed of, and looking at his meaningful pictures we receive an attitude of our life’s reality in individual perspective, which is so sharp and remarkable in such loosing colors. May you enjoy your world and deliver your ideas to us!!!!"

"Some people take pictures, Craig captures moments.
Real moments. His work always reflects a very personal style to real world issues. He tells a story with each piece of his art.
He inspires and teaches us all through his images.
He doesn't wait for the picture to come to him.... Craig seeks out those extraordinary moments most of us never catch."26th February, 2007

"Craig's photos provide a beautiful "slice of life," presented with a consistent eye towards the social context of his imagery. His wandering camera captures the nobility and the pathos of day to day existence. He is consistently both one of my favorite flickr streams and most insightful photographers in the New Orleans area."

"Craig's photographs transports me to his own eye, his own stories how he sees this crazy world we live, he captures the human behavior wonderfully, magically.. reality, cinematicly, dark and light, almost tragic, with a touch of comedy like the circus..but is real..
Thanks for your wonderful eye.."24th February, 2007

"It’s not easy to write a testimonial for Craig, because my words could never encapsulate the experience I have when I visiting this lovely flickr pal. One thing very clear to me is that Craig is someone who cares – passionately and deeply – a real ‘people person’. As he goes about his business of documenting the world around him - the injustice and hardship, as well as the good stuff - you just know he’ll do it with an empathic and honest eye. Selective release of news can sometimes prohibit the truth from reaching foreign shores, but you can trust Craig to lead you to the parts that others (often those with the purse-strings) choose to ignore. His work in New Orleans post-Katrina demonstrates this so well.
But there’s more to Craig than a social conscience. He is also a very creative photographer. The quality of his images is stunning… and it just keeps getting better. I’m convinced one day some famous photographic journal will discover him here and snap him up. If (or perhaps I should say when) that happens I’ll be very happy for him."23rd February, 2007

"When I saw for the first time Craigs' photos I was suprised. They were differ markedly from photos which I have seen in the past. They're so peculiar and full of emotions. It is no mean feat to captured whole palette of humans feelings. He's doing it in perfect and stunning way. I'm really impressed and I wish that someday my 'the most uncommon of North American friend' will take me photo. It would be one of the most beautiful gift for me :)"

"I was introduced to Craig’s images when searching for views of Burning Man, but was overwhelmed by the power of his photographs from New Orleans. His views of the battered national treasure are poignant, lively and riveting. He not only exposes the neglect of the regime in power and the relentless devastation, but also reveals the resilient humanity and heroic struggle of our brothers and sisters who create a way of life there."

"I fell upon Craig's work not very long ago when I was browsing through some images taken in and around the New Orleans area. Since I live in the Katrina disater area, I've become numb to seeing loss in every person's life. Craig's work is so compelling, I was reminded of the pain and suffering I saw days after the storm. His ability to capture the emotion of his subject touched me so much that I began looking at every piece of work he has posted online. I look forward to seeing his work everyday to remind me of what New Orleans once was, and what it has become."

"Craig's pictures document the street life and culture of New Orleans, telling the true story of the people. He shows aspects of life in America which are not well known to those of us on the other side of the world and makes them part of our consciousness. His pictures are revealing and graphic. He's a truly great photographer and documenter of history."

Elisha Cook Jr. says:
"I think The Voice of Eye is doing a superb job documenting the terrible tragedy of New Orleans after Katrina. He shows us through his pictures and texts how the government on all levels turned it's back on the suffering people. I think that all Americans ought to know about the tragedy so that the record is clear about the true nature of what took place there. The Voice of Eye will part of the historical record which shows how inept and insincere our government really is when the chips are down and the people need help. If any curators, editors or others in the media can help to get this important work looked at or published I would urge them to do so."

"Craig, The Voice of Eye besides being an amazing photographer is a humanitarian, chronicling the lives of those forgotten and dismissed as less desirable because of economic status or racial identity. He shows compassion in his photo story telling that jumps out of the frame, there is a respect for the subject that is felt by those who look on. I applaud you Craig for taking a leap of faith and going down to NOLA and showing us the people that are still suffering, our fellow Americans that CNN and the rest are no longer covering for twisted political agendas!!
Thanks for doing what you do minus the urine found in the mainstream media but with all the passion of an activist!!!"6th February, 2007
