The Citizens Technical Environmental Committee, or CTEC, provides accurate and timely information about the Superfund process and related environmental issues in and around Butte, Montana. Historic mining and smelting significantly impacted the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the area. Historic mine wastes (waste rock and fine-grained, processed mine tailings) still present in the area pose risks to human health and the environment.
Through the federal Superfund process and the State of Montana's Natural Resource Damages Program, environmental damages are being remediated and/or restored. Created through an EPA Technical Assistance Grant, CTEC helps citizens track the EPA process for evaluating and remediating the operable units associated with Superfund sites from Butte downstream to the Warm Spring Ponds, and associated restoration projects.
The Butte area, including Silver Bow Creek, is one of four broad contamination areas jointly known as the Clark Fork Basin Superfund Sites or the Clark Fork Basin Superfund Complex. Others sites are the Montana Pole & Treating Plant in Butte (which CTEC also tracks), the Milltown Reservoir Sediments site 120 miles downstream near Missoula, and the Anaconda Company Smelter site in the town of Anaconda, 20 miles west of Butte.
