HISTORY OF CRAIGMILLAR

Craigmillar is rich in history, but it was the Housing (Scotland) Act 1925 which created "housing for the working classes of Scotland'. Edinburgh Council bought this land from The Wauuchope family through this act to create The Craigmillar Housing Scheme to house "the working classes" to give them decent housing. Thus Craigmillar became a 100% "working class" area that has developed a rich artistic culture that has influenced many around the world.

Where The Arts was and continues to be a catalyst for social change, caring and sharing. Originally started by a mothers groups who wanted thier children to have a better and quality life in 1962.

These photos are from my mothers archive (who was in the original mothers group) of Craigmillar, Edinburgh, Scotland from 1930's to present day. They are mostly about The Craigmillar Festival Society and The Arts.
The interest in its artistic and cultural past has always been strong. This and others websites reflect this continuing worldwide interest. The Arts: The Catalyst exhibition and documentary of 2004 was a turning point in raising awareness. And winning The Saltire award at The Edinburgh International Film Festival was another.
