‘Cool’ Art, an exhibition of contemporary art, will run at Alma Gallery from 25 April to 15 May.
For the exhibition its curator Anda Boluža has selected Andrejs Grants’ Double Portraits, a series of black-and-white photographs created in the 1990s and never before exhibited in Latvia, Barbara Gaile’s paintings, and two works of art created especially for the exhibition – animations by Krišs Salmanis and Mārtiņš Ratniks.
“These days the boundaries of art have expanded and art often happens outside of exhibition halls, prompting reflection on its inviting and impulsive nature. In Riga at the moment the spectator is constantly being drawn into entertainment events, a flurry of musical accompaniments and circus performances. A painting in the understated exhibition space of an art gallery feels like an enticing and at the same time refreshing contrast to all this commotion. Part of the concept of the exhibition is an attempt to discover how a seemingly ‘cool’ work of contemporary art in the shape of a video or a painting can provide the moment of quiet we sometimes so desperately need. I think sometimes it is good to stop and feel this quiet surround you, so that you then may hear the sounds that are never noticed in everyday hustle and bustle, but are just as important – the wind in the trees, or the birds in the sky. The exhibited works show that something is alive behind the apparent stillness, it is life itself that is hiding there,” says the curator of the exhibition, Anda Boluža.

No 25. aprīļa līdz 15. maijam galerijā „Alma” (Rūpniecības ielā 1, Rīgā) būs eksponēta laikmetīgās mākslas izstāde „Aukstā māksla”.
Izstādes kuratore Anda Boluža ekspozīcijā ietvērusi Andreja Granta melnbalto fotogrāfiju sēriju „Dubultportreti”, kas tapusi 1990.gados, Barbaras Gailes gleznas un divus speciāli izstādei radītus mākslas darbus – Kriša Salmaņa un Mārtiņa Ratnika animācijas.
„Mūsdienās mākslas robežas ir krietni paplašinājušās un bieži vien māksla noris ārpus izstāžu zālēm, rosinot pārdomas par tās aicinošo un impulsīvo raksturu. Skatītājs tiek iesaistīts izklaidējošos pasākumos, muzikālu pavadījumu un cirka priekšnesumu jūklī. Kā valdzinošs un vienlaikus veldzējošs pretstats tam visam šķiet, piemēram, glezna mākslas galerijas atturīgā izstāžu telpā. Izstādes iecere ietver mēģinājumu atklāt, kā šķietami „vēss” laikmetīgās mākslas darbs video vai gleznas formā spēj sniegt dažbrīd tik nepieciešamo mirkli klusuma. Manuprāt, ir vērtīgi dažkārt apstāties un izjust to ap sevi, lai pēc brīža sadzirdētu ikdienā nekad nemanāmās, bet vienlīdz būtiskās skaņas – vēju kokos vai putnus gaisā. Ekspozīcijā ietvertie darbi parāda to, ka aiz šķietamā sastinguma ir manāma dzīvība un te paslēpusies pati dzīve” – kuratore Anda Boluža.
