"What can I say about the man, the myth, the legend, the Si? Well, I guess first I have to declare my interest and admit that I have known him for longer than flickr has known either of us, and maybe longer even than this interweb mullarkey has been kicking around.
What you shouldn't expect to find here are regular updates, pointless flower macros, good spelling or shots produced by a machine on automatic rather than a human with a talented eye and practised hand.
What you SHOULD expect to find here (unless Si changes his ways and finally lays out some cash on a dslr, but I doubt that as he loves technology that you can take to bits and fiddle with far too much) is some mighty mighty fine black and white film work. For those of you who don't know, this 'stream is full of work conceived, shot, developed and processed by Si himself. Proper old school DIY photography, the kind I am only now after a couple of years practice on digital even vaguely brave enough to consider start attempting myself.
You just have to be impressed by the shots you'll find here, and impressed also by the ridiculously steep learning curve that Si is still happily climbing. Getting decent results on digital is pretty easy relatively, but learning on film, with its lack of live previews and the inability to shoot 40,000 cost free pictures of the same thing in the hope of getting 1 usable shot, is much harder. To learn much of that and the arcane alchemy of old fashioned processing and devleopment at the same time is something to be admired.
I also partly owe my own photographic odyssey to Si - without seeing some of the work he was producing I'm not sure I would have been motivated enough to pick up a camera in the first place.
Comrade Si, home cooked but never half baked."4th December, 2007

"Comrade Si has a way with a lense. B&W or colour - all different and yet the authorship is clear in a way I haven't come across on Flickr. I especially like that these pictures aren't better than life. They are snaps. I'm reminded of that wonderful photo by Bert Hardy - actually carefully prepared but made to show that you can take fine pictures with a Brownie box:
