Picture frames ?
Occasionally I am asked why I've put those black bars across the top and bottom on most of my older landscape format pictures.
For me the bars were, at the time, part of the picture, my interpretation of the subject and therefore I don't see them as a "frame" as such.

The story behind it:
My main profession is film and video camerawork (Director/Cameraman, Cameraman, Lighting Cameraman, Director of Photography, you name it).
The aspect ratio of my landscape format images is usually 1.8:1 which is my personal compromise of the formats I work with most of the time in Film/Video (16:9, 1.78:1, etc.).
The bars cut the image down to that ratio from the original format of the camera sensor I happened to shoot the image with at the time.

Exeptions
are some panoramic shots, images that are older and, simply, images were I feel should have another ratio - or a proper frame ;-)

These days however, I come back to the borderless versions and only use borders occasionally.

My technique
Frankly, I think you either like the picture - or not. The techniques used shouldn't be important, nor should you think about it. It's the picture itself that counts.
That said, if you ask (either by private message or by comment) you will, of course, receive the answer.

I shoot RAW only and mainly use an Apple iMac 27", the incredible Apple Aperture 3 photo management and processing software and Photoshop CS5 Ext.
I upload my pictures to flickr using the built-in Apple Aperture or iPhoto uploader - a pure joy to use.

N.B.
Don't be put off by the vast amount of groups listed below. I *do not* post like crazy. But, at least to my knowledge, flickr doesn't have the ability to bookmark groups you like and want to visit often. So there's no choice other than to become a member …
Whilst I do enjoy (and gain inspiration) by visiting groups, I post to only a selected few.

Bildrahmen ?
Ein paar Mal hat mich jemand gefragt, warum einige meiner älteren Bilder diese schwarzen Balken am oberen und unteren Bildrand haben.
Für mich waren die Balken zum Zeitpunkt der Bearbeitung Teil des Bildes, meiner Bildauffassung. Daher sehe ich die Balken nicht als einen Rahmen an.

Die Geschichte dahinter:
Mein Hauptberuf ist Regie-Kameramann oder Kameramann.
Das Seitenverhältnis meiner querformatigen Fotos ist zumeist 1.8:1. Dies ist mein Kompromiss aus den Formaten mit denen ich beruflich hauptsächlich arbeite (16:9, 1.78:1, usw.).
Die Balken verändern das Originalformat der des Kamerasensors, mit der die jeweilige Aufnahme entstanden ist auf eben jene 1.8:1.

Ausnahmen
sind einige Panoramaaufnahmen, ältere Bilder oder Bilder, wo ich halt meine, daß ein anderes Seitenverhältnis besser passt - oder wo ein "richtiger" Rahmen angebracht ist …

Heutzutage benutze ich Rahmen nur noch selten.

Meine Technik.
Also, ich denke, ein Bild spricht jemanden an - oder eben nicht. Egal, welche Technik verwendet wurde, das sollte egal sein. Das Bild an sich zählt.
Wer aber fragt (per Privatnachricht oder im Kommentarfeld) bekommt natürlich die Antwort.

Ich fotografiere ausschließlich im RAW-Format und benutze hauptsächlich ein Apple iMac 27", die brilliante Apple Aperture 3 Fotomanagement und -bearbeitungssoftware, sowie Photoshop CS5 Ext..
Meine Bilder lade ich hoch zu flickr mit dem phantastischen in Apple Aperture bzw. in iPhoto eingebauten Uploader - ein wahres Vergnügen.

P.S.
Lassen Sie sich nicht durch die wahnsinnige Menge an Gruppen täuschen. Leider erlaubt es flickr meines Wissens nach nicht, einfach nur Gruppen zu sichern, die mich interessieren. Daher bleibt nichts anderes übrig als Mitglied zu werden …
So oft ich auch in den Gruppen stöbere (und Inspirationen bekomme), so genau wähle ich auch die Gruppe aus, in denen ich meine Bilder einstelle.
