OUR BEGINNINGS

In 1996, businesswoman and philanthropist Christel DeHaan sold her company, Resort Condominiums International, and decided that the next phase of her life would be devoted to helping impoverished children. Her motto, "The more we have, the more we need to share," has been translated into a holistic human development model that brings about lasting change and transformation.

OUR GROWTH

Christel House opened five learning centers in less than four years – in Mexico, India, South Africa, Venezuela and the United States. Since that time, our programs have expanded to serve nearly 2,600 students, their families and communities. Christel House employs more than 250 dedicated professionals who help our children optimize their potential and achieve productive, self-sufficient lives.

The mission of Christel House South Africa is to help children break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient, contributing members of their society.

OUR VISION

Providing food, shelter and medical care are fundamental components of poverty alleviation. The holistic and transformational approach of Christel House expands beyond basic survival needs and addresses the problem through long-term, systemic interventions and human transformation.

The cycle of poverty is vicious and repetitive. No magic wand can be waved to make it disappear. Transforming a life destined to poverty into a life of self-sufficiency can only be achieved by combating the causes of poverty: lack of education, lack of opportunity, lack of dignity, lack of good health and lack of positive role models. Our work is longitudinal. It requires tremendous commitment, long-term involvement and dedicated professionals. And it happens one child at a time.

The future is bright for children and families who are at Christel House today, but it is the exponential effect of our work that will ultimately yield the greatest impact. Future generations, free from the crushing burden of poverty, will have the opportunity to live productive lives.
