This children's foster home in Chirimba, Blantyre aims to help Malawian orphans and destitutes on a long-term basis. In the housing facilities, built by Eduard Wendland, children within the ages of 3 to 16 years will grow up together in a family-like environment. The aim is to provide a permanent home, a stable environment, as well as a basic health care and food security.

After receiving approval from the Social Welfare Department of Blantyre District in May 2005, Chombo Children’s Home opened its doors to receive the first children, aged between 5 and 16 in June 2005. Two full-time house mothers and two assistants take care of the children and provide a family-like, Christian environment, in which Malawian children can grow and prosper.

Chombo Mission was founded by Eduard and Ursula Wendland. Since the AIDS pandemic started to destroy family structures in Malawi, they felt the need to help affected Malawian children. Given that the number of destitute children is increasing, the vision to set up a children relief project to help and support Malawian children on a larger scale developed. Through personal contacts in Germany, cooperation with Malawians, and pledges to support the foster children home project, the first orphans have now moved into the facilities at Chirimba.

After his retirement as a pastor, Eduard Wendland, who has been living and working in Malawi since 1966, supervised the construction of the housing facilities for Chombo Mission on an honorary and unsalaried basis. Despite setbacks and meager funding, he continued to work on the project, asking his personal friends for support and help, driven by his vision to help young Malawians.

Mr. Wendland commented: "I would like to thank all that have supported me throughout the years. Special thanks to all Malawian and German friends that provided support in the concept and building phases of this project. My wish is that this project will make a difference in the lives of many Malawian children in the years to come."

Currently about 47 children live at Chombo (March 2010).
