My interest in photography began when my father gave me an old Brownie box camera to play with when I was about 3 or 4 years old. Through his and my mom, MJ, Lauren (the judge), and Michaela (curtie) continuing support, I take pictures of they and my idiosyncratic town with its urban art--with its neverending collage of Guadalupe iconography and fascinating mix of architectural styles. I also enjoy drawing graphic abstractions, creating the occasional digital collage, and making art with fiber and needle.

In spring 2008, I earned a master's in Rhetoric and Writing Studies from UTEP, where I had also completed a B.A. in Creative Writing/Humanities in 2006. I entered the Ph.D. Writing and Rhetoric Studies program in Fall 2006 and will begin doctoral core courses in Fall 2008. My main interest is to apply rhetorical theory to photography, graffiti, other forms of visual rhetoric, and writing centers and tutoring. Currently, I maintain the UTEP Writing Center and Frontera Rhetorica RSA chapter web sites.

Originally, the photography bug first hit me when my dad let me play with an old Kodak Brownie. My first camera was a Leica iiic, loaned from my dad to me so I could take pictures for my high school newspaper.

A few years ago, I received a gift of a Zeiss-Nicor bellows camera from a very special family friend, and now I shoot 120 films using other antique and toy cameras. They are fun and always spark up the conversation when I am out shooting pictures, especially in downtown El Paso or traveling
