The Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery was officially dedicated in 1891, as a community burying ground for citizens of Empire, Marshfield, and North Bend. It was established by the International Order of Oddfellows (IOOF) Cemetery Association on land purchased from C. H. Merchant for $350.
On November 8, 1921, the IOOF Cemetery Association deeded all of the unsold gravesites and driveways of the Pioneer Cemetery to the City of Marshfield. Then, in 1944, the city of Coos Bay (formerly Marshfield) acquired the cemetery by virtue of a Marshall’s deed. The city provides only basic maintenance. New burials are limited to the cremains in plots already owned by the family.
