oli&caroline

I have been told that I would make a great princess in a Gilliam fairy tale and I might sometimes agree except that at the moment I am resisting the urge to smoke a cigarette indoors....(hee hee) In a nutshell so you have an idea of what I am interested in without rambling on for ages, I love all sorts of music especially experimental and unique voices, all sorts of art(especially the Dadaists, Surrealists and Kiki Smith) The Magic Pony toy store at Queen and Bathurst, documentary film, poetry, wine, Japanese food(spicy tuna rolls--yummm) and my feather duvet that I refer to as my nest...I am not too crazy(my therapist sez so...)

I used to model professionally and have a bit of a snob in me but that can easily be confused with simple good taste. And I have a loving husband (as of Decmber 2, 2006) - Oli Goldsmith - who is great, but my semi-craziness does lead me to be a tad aggressive and un-rational at times, we both admit it :) and he doesn't deny his bouts of artistic madess either:) He calls me soft'n'mean which is a pretty good way to sum it up. All of this has helped spark a rekindling of my art making which I am going to begin to share with you here. He is an artist too and you can see his work at flickr.com/photos/oligoldsmith - we have plans in the works to collaborate on some children's books! We are also in process of opening a fun little online store--more on this to come shortly as it begins to evolve!!

One final note we have 4 crazy cats who are weird and wonderful, including one especially loving and special little beast name Froh-bo who knows how to play fetch.

A Little About My Work--for you "scholarly types with time on your hands" :) a.k.a an abreviated artist statement written in the third person (as these things so tend to be written)

Ahem...

With influences including Bosch, Carl Jung, traditional fairy-tales and mythology, Caroline Bacher's mixed-medium work presents re-occuring dichotomies, confrontations and relationships between the individual and facets of the self through a personal lens of metaphor and symbol.

Themes such as memory, time, movement, birth, death and regeneration and their varying effects on the psyche are prevailent in Caroline's mysterious, yet innately understood projections of the ever changing yet ingrained mental environment of the individual.

Using a range of materials such as graphite, coloured pencil, ink, pastel, acrylic paint and digital transfers(in select rare cases), Caroline's fluid and spontaneous creative process is echoed in the dream like nature of the resulting work.

Caroline was born and raised in rural Muskoka (Northern Canada) and graduated from The Ontario College of Art & Design in 2002 as a Sculpture/Installation major. She has throughout her life enjoyed experimenting with a wide variety of traditional and unconventional artistic materials, but has always had a special fondness for creating 2D narratives, which stems from a great love of children's books and story telling. Caroline recently pursued an independent study of jewellery and small scale sculpture at George Brown College. She currently lives and works in Toronto with Oli Goldsmith and 4 afore mentioned cats.

For even more about my work and it's sensibilties, please contact me directly for the very detailed and witty thesis I defended upon graduating OCAD. It likens the digestive process to the art making process so it's not for the faint of heart, but well worth the read.

"Caroline is truly a renaissance woman. Her drawings and paintings are so original. I get mesmerized staring at them. And the girl can sculpt. I can't wait to see the others that she's done. Having recently gotten married myself I can really appreciate her powerful design of her own ring. She can do it all and then some. Amazing person."

"I literally JUST discovered Caroline's art and am immediately addicted! Her style is sublime and provocative. I also enjoy the thought processes behind her art.

This is one of those photostreams you just want to get a large cup of coffee (or tea) ;))....and immerse yourself in her art!"
