I am a full-time professional Wildlife & Nature Photographer. Stock photo library. Author of several books. Published Internationally.

I have been photographing bears for about 20 years and to say the least I have been in some pretty harry situations with them ... I have gotten so close that I have had them come up behind me and rub there shoulders on my back leg, then walk away about 10 feet and look back at me and give me a look like "Whats my problem". But as far as protection .... yes I carry a pistol with me, but in all me years of photographing bears,I have never even pulled it out of the holster.
I also have a master in wildlife biology plus 20 years of field study, that I know what I'm looking at when I'm around bears .... not saying I know everything there is to know about bears (for I don't), but I know more than the average person will "EVER" know and I don't recommend anyone to get as close as I do ..... In my work shops that I give.... I stress a lot that when photographers go out to photograph animals, that they learn some things about the animal they will be photographing .... that's the safest thing one can do... to say the least what you will not do to the animal while your trying to photograph them ..... thats called stressing them out.... get only as close so that you can get them doing what they normally do, as if your not there. That's the best photograph you will ever take.

I am a Christian and a Conservative because:

I believe abortion is murder.

If a conservative feels its ok to water board enemy combatants to save American lives.
A liberal will fight tooth and nail to stop that, but feels it's ok to suck the brains out of a fetus to except Abortion as law.

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If I, as a conservative who wants to pursue my dreams and passions as in Photography and getting close to animals.
A liberal will say "NO ... under public safety law, for the public is to stupid to protect them selves"

A conservative thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a Black or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels or changes stations.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
(Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it,
or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed.
If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A liberal will block me because he or she is "offended".

That is fine by me.
Have a swell day!

    Steve Courson says:

"Taking great bear photos, especially of the Brown (Alaska) and Grizzly (Mainland West Coast) is not as easy as Buck makes it look. The guy is definitely working for them and even when he finds them, it still takes talent to click at the right time, with the right settings and to wow the viewer. Buck wows the viewer consistently, and I'm a big fan of his, even though I remain highly jealous and wish he'd post an occasional bone head shot so my own wouldn't look so bad in comparison. Keep shootin' Buck!"

    Wil_Bloodworth says:

"I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and shooting with Buck for the better part of a week in Grand Tetons National Park in June of 2010 on a DirtCheapPhotoTours.com trip. Our trip would have not been any where near as exciting without Buck. He is a superb photographer, a fine gentleman, and a stranger to no one. And I have never met someone so knowledgeable about every animal around!

I am truly blessed to have met him, learned from him, and I consider him a friend!"

    RH Miller says:

"What can I say about Buck...

Buck is the quintessential wildlife photographer! He has seen and photographed more wild bears, eagles, and other varied wildlife than anyone I know. He is genuine, down to earth, and willing to help in anyway he can. I've watched his images as he has traveled from Alaska, Hawaii, and now Montana and he is adept in any environment. What a privilege it is to see how a real pro does it!

Most of all, Buck is a good Flickr friend... how can he not be a great guy with a sweet wife like Donna!

Daryl L. Hunter - The Hole Picture says:

"Bucks steady stream of bears and eagles is a portfolio too aspire to. Buck and his wife Donna’s photostreams make me homesick for Alaska and I delight that mine makes them homesick for where Buck used to cowboy in Wyoming.

Buck consistently captures Alaskan bears somewhere besides the clichéd spots of McNeil and Brooks Falls and it is always a treat."
