"Love Sonnet"
...to the green moss patches beneath the withered grass of a soybean field at harvesttime
Sweet empathy--the curse with which I'm gifted!
To share the joys and sorrows of the world--
How deep in misery my spirit's hurled,
And to what heights of joy my soul is lifted!
I see the pain of all creation groaning;
I sense the fight for life all objects feel,
And whether person fabled, dreamt, or real,
It's for the right to blossom that they're moaning.
And so I mourn the fading of each flower
And burst with joy as bud unfolds its head,
While cringing at accounts of captives' terror,
I search for trace of beauty amongst the dead.
My heart becomes the world's joy/sorrow bearer
With love crushed swelling rapture bleeding red.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This world is too much for me,
I cannot grasp its height, its width, its breadth.
And yet, all that I see does not even touch
The vastness of the universe.
Take one spot of space, my seat on this bench,
And I could never exhaust the richness I see,
The beauty of each tree, stone, pattern, form!
Then, focus in, like a microscope,
One leaf, one blade of grass of immeasurable beauty.
Look closer, closer at the wonder of innumerable cells.
Or, look outwards, farther, at distant clouds,
And know that beyond is infinite space,
Not empty, but dense with the fullness of heaven,
Billions of stars, galaxies, never-seen beauty!
And yet this is only from my own tiny spot;
Travel a few feet further, and new wonders appear,
At the next home, next town, next region, next world!
...
The beauty to be seen, to be learned, to be made!
Why can I never experience it all?
Oh Lord, if this world is so vast to me,
How could I ever grasp your greatness?
My mind should explode!
