In 1938 Andy Boch founded Boch Sales and Service, in Norwood, Massachusetts, a small town 17 miles south of Boston.
It started as a simple one-car repair shop set up in his home garage. Andy was the owner/mechanic with his wife Ida as the mechanics helper, parts runner and homemaker. She even helped rope tow broken down cars back to the shop.
At the end of World War II Nash-Kelvinator approached Andy Boch about being a Nash dealer, because of his reputation for customer courtesy and outstanding service. At first Andy thought he could sell from his home repair shop, but neighbors convinced him to reconsider.
Boch then purchased land on U.S. Route 1 also known as Providence Highway and had a 60 by 66 foot building constructed. The new building had a one-car showroom and a well-equipped service department.
Three years later, Boch added a body shop and an ESSO gas station, to provide steady income. Andy thought that when gas customers pulled in, they would notice that Boch Sales and Service also sold Nash cars. Boch had no problem selling cars. Right after World War II, it had been four years with no vehicles coming out of Detroit. Everyone was looking for a new car and Andy’s new business was booming.
Andy Boch’s philosophy was that good customer service was very important, so the dealership paid strict attention to service, both before and after the sale.
In 1947 Andy’s son Ernie Boch joined the business. A born salesman, Ernie started building the sales volume. It was difficult at first because of a low supply of vehicles, but in 1956 Boch Nash sold over 300 new cars.
Ernie worked with American Motors Company’s hard driving CEO George Romney. Romney was a hard driving business leader, whose methods of running a business clearly rubbed off on Ernie Boch.
The early 1960’s was a great time for American Motors and its dealers. In 1963 Boch Rambler (that name was changed when Nash faded away) sold over 2,200 cars, making Boch the largest-volume American Motors dealer in the country.
In the mid-1960’s Boch added the Dodge line and in 1975 decided to give up the AMC franchise.
Ernie Boch continued to grow the business along with his son Ernie Boch Jr., who joined the family business in 1984. Ernie Sr. passed in 2003 leaving Ernie Jr. at the helm. Today he oversees the daily operation of Boch Automotive, dominating a section of Route 1 in Norwood, known as “The Automile”, a term coined by Ernie Sr.
Today Boch sells Toyota, Honda, Ferrari and Maserati and is the New England distributor of Subaru. The Boch family continues the tradition of success; Boch Toyota is the second largest Toyota dealer in sales, in America and Boch Honda is the number one Honda dealer in sales, on the Planet.
