My photographic interests are diverse from scenic landscapes to the myriad of species that make up the natural world.
In all cases my personal challenge is, to the best of my ability, correctly identify what is portrayed in my images and in the research process I hope to gain some beneficial knowledge that may be usefully shared.
My general use of Flickr is almost entirely information based and seldom purely recreational. Flickr's tagging system provides an efficient basis to make my images available both for my own personal use, as well as by others while the MY PICS MAP facility allows selected images to be geographically located. (Load time - maybe 30-60 seconds.)

After many years of growing our own rainforest on our 6.5 acre property on the NSW Mid North Coast of Australia from a specialised interest in Australian Rainforest flora developed an interest in trying to identify the species on our property. From that process followed a determination to raise awareness in the wider community of the depreciating state of Australian rainforests and the increasingly endangered flora and fauna within.
My backgound is far removed from botany, and I would certainly not consider myself a botanist, rather an enthusiastic amateur nature photographer doing my best to get a name on the species I photograph.
Keeping on top of botanical nomenclature has become my new job in retirement and the day to day species verification and research requirements associated with the administrative responsibilities of the - IDENTIFYING AUSTRALIAN RAINFOREST PLANTS, TREES and FUNGI Flickr group while sometimes demanding, do keep the grey matter functioning. Nevertheless there are many beneficial aspects to the job, not the least of which is meeting so many fellow flickr photographers.

Setting a rigorous botanical standard of only accepting images to the group titled with the correct botanical name has certainly required a steep learning curve and I am eternally grateful to the many people far more expert than I who have tolerated my knowledge inadequacies and assisted in the ID Rainforest group identification process, along the way sharing their wisdom, and above all else, sharing the bigger picture vision to create a Wikipedia style, interactive and freely accessible resource, right here on Flickr. - See what we have achieved collaboratively here in the groups DATABASE INDEX

Coinciding with the establishment of the Australian rainforest plants group in August 2007 I also naively founded the - FIELD GUIDE : FLOWERING TREES of the WORLD Flickr group.
Due to the unsustainable workload involved with managing both groups after 10 months it became essential that I relinquish responsibilities for that group. Fortunately Tatters agreed to take over and she has built that group into the premier Flowering Trees group on Flickr. I remain a proud contributor and supporter of that group while Tatters has remained a constant source of both help and inspiration and a good friend.
