Black Brothers Esteem
is a program of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation that builds community among African-American gay, bisexual, same-gender-loving, and transgender/gender-variant folks, and gives them a sense of control over their lives.
Black Brothers Esteem members, who live predominantly in the Tenderloin/Polk Gulch and Sixth Street Corridor sections of San Francisco, are at a disproportionately high risk for HIV infection. For twelve years BBE has assisted them in their struggle not only with issues related to HIV, but also with racism, prejudice regarding sexual and gender identity, addiction, urban violence, poverty, health care and housing.
Black Brothers Esteem offers individual counseling and support, health care resources, drop-in groups, social events, and skills-building workshops. Most importantly, BBE provides a safe place to meet where folks gain support from one another, and plan both small group activities and public community development such as health outreach at the Sixth Street Fair and San Francisco’s LGBT Pride Celebration, the Life of Hope: Black LGBT Spirituality Forum, and BBE’s Spiritually Healthy resource guide. BBE’s resource guides can be downloaded from www.sfaf.org/bbe.
