I was 10 years old when learned in a dark room the magic of photography, but I took my first photos many years later when I finally was able to buy my own camera. It was a compact Yashica I got used in a “pulga” in Santa Barabara, California. Today, thanks to digital photography, I am learning how to draw with light, shooting with a Nikon D700 and later manipulating the 0's and 1's in my computer.

As an art sociologist, I am interested in the intersection of art, culture, and migration. I studied sociology at the Universidad de Guadalajara and have a Master’s degree from El Colegio de Michoacán. I am currently a doctoral candidate in the department of sociology in Northwestern University (Evanston) working on a dissertation on the reception of the art of Mexican immigrant and outsider artist Martín Ramírez. I am also writing a Martin Ramirez biography in Spanish. I have already published some articles on this artist (Letras Libres 2008) and contributed to "Martín Ramírez," an art catalog published by Marquand Books and the American Folk Art Museum (New York 2007). I recently published a biographical essay in both the Spanish and English catalog editions for the "Martín Ramírez: Marcos de reclusión" exhibit at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid (2010). I had also published a book on Mexican immigrants in California titled "El Dilema del Retorno" (Mexico 1998), an essay on the exhibition catalog "Claiming Space: Mexican Americans in U.S. Cities" published by the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts (El Paso 2008), and the biographical chapter on the book on Mexican immigrant and graphic artist from Chicago Rene Arceo (2010).
