And if a day goes by without my doing something related to photography, it's as though I've neglected something essential to my existence, as though I had forgotten to wake up. I know that the accident of my being a photographer has made my life possible.

~Richard Avedon, 1970

[day 17] laundry day

I am a 41 year old mother to a bunch of college age kids and now a grandmother. I live in a 100+ year old farmhouse in rural Mississippi (OK A few miles from a town of 40,000) with an odd and ever changing assortment of animals and characters.

I shoot downtown Meridian on Front Street for my indoor shoots but also do portrait and commercial shoots on location at the beach, on rooftops, under bridges and in alleys all over the southeast. I am "a little different" when it comes to my vision for portraiture and do very little traditional portrait work.

I have taken pictures most of my adult life, getting semi-serious when I was in my early 20's and bought a nice 35mm camera and a bag full of lenses from a retiring professional. Raising kids and being a military wife didn't leave me with a lot of spare time to seriously pursue photography. In 2001 (I think) I bought my first digital camera, and was in love. In 2003, I started taking photography classes and learned my way around a dark room. I studied with a great commercial photographer learning composition and traditional lighting, then with a couple of accomplished wedding and portrait photographers.

In 2004, I bought my first dslr. At that point it was still a somewhat obsessive hobby. But at midlife when I found myself in need of a career change to go along with all of the other changes life had forced on me, photography became the obvious choice.

I love doing lifestyle and environmental portraits, especially senior portraits but lately I have been doing a little model portfolio work and some commercial work too.

I am experimenting with 40's style pin-up work with a slight twist. If you want some sexy pictures while I experiment, email me.

Although photography is my primary "job" at the moment, I am also an eclectic artist. (That's a nice way for saying dabbler, right?) My real passion is designing and making jewelry. I work in hot glass, both fusing and lampwork bead making, and cold glass, as well as metal clay and most recently adding traditional metalworking (mostly silver, some copper) to my designs. I am also working on some pendants featuring my art photography set in sterling silver under clear glass-like resin.

I enjoy all sorts of crafty pursuits.... a little sewing, stained glass and china mosaics, digital scrapbooking, visual journaling, a little painting, remodeling and decorating my 100+ year old home, gardening, making soap and herbal concoctions, cooking and baking, and anything involving power tools!

Flickr is not my professional portfolio. Flickr is where I put the pictures that I shoot for fun. Pictures of butterflies and rainbows and my kids. Pictures of my cat and things that strike me funny over the course of the day and roadtrips.

"Rebecca gets well-deserved attention for her great wildlife photography, but she's a really fine photographer of all aspects of life. She's always capturing something interesting from the world around her. I wonder when she'll let us see some of what comes out of that great studio(/mind) of hers."

"I have been looking back as approach the end of my first year on Flicker and one of the wonderful people I owe a thank you to is RebeccaB. I have learned so much from her wonderful photography. She is coming into her magic season and the world of dragonflies and butterflies she will open up to us is one I eagerly await. She has a magic voice and sings to the dragonflies and holds them in her sway while she has her photographic way with them. Insects and flowers fill her stream with beauty. She even has eagles living in Mississippi. There is magic in RebeccaB, it shines out of her images. I am glad she is my friend and I hope you will pay her a visit!!"
