A vegan includes animals into the "basic ethics" and therefore does not consume anything avoidable which harms animals.

Common products for which alternatives are selected: milk, eggs, meat, derivates thereof, leather, unshaved leather, wool, silk, honey or products that were tested on animals. Some also reject products whose production damages the environment like cotton. Hemp, linen, nettel, goretex and if not avoidable - synthetic materials are used by vegans for clothing. Hemp is a great material. Speaking of which, many vegans also reject any drug use like nicotine, alcohol, THC-hemp, sleeping pills, herion, cocaine and so on. Since humans are animals, the protection of self is of course part of vegan ethics, and drugs are seen as a form of self-violence or auto-aggression.

That sounds difficult, but after a short adaption period and reorientation of personal consumption culture, it quickly becomes normal and you don't want it any other way. Highly recommended.
