I'm a painter and illustrator, writer , editor and teacher working on the west coast of the U.S.A..
I've been more or less committed to drawing and writing since I was about thirteen. That's more than half a century these days.
WARNING:
ALL postings of comments on my work must be text ONLY. All work by other artists, Flickr members or not ( such as Salvador Dali, whom I have a strong antipathy toward), "awards", symbols, trademarks, colophons, moving signs or brassards, etc. will be DELETED without further notice.
I welcome your TEXT ONLY comments.
NO, repeat, NO active links ( or inactive) to products or services OF ANY KIND offered for sale may be posted under your text comments on my work. Information links of various kinds may be excepted. BUT, my site is not a "venue" for your advertising. I'm sorry but my view of sales of art and art as "product" is different from most of the artists I know or have met.
Here is a comment I made on the JKPP site which represents my view:
NCMallory says:
Most of you know by now I never sell my work and destroy most of it.
But my work is wide open for theft for any good cause. Please feel free to use any of my JKPP stuff for any good purpose. I always appreciate being notified before my work appears in publications.
By every measurement available to me I have concluded that JKPP folks are fine people.
What are the purposes I deny my work for?
Anyone who:
Promotes hate or war, either for political , religious, racial, gender-related, (gay-bashing) or any similar reasons may not use my work.
Any use of my work even remotely related to cruelty to animals is strictly forbidden.
Use of my work by commercial corporations whose ambitions and actions worsen the poverty, starvation and basic human rights of people anywhere on planet Earth is strictly forbidden to the extent I can control such use.
( watch DEMOCRACY NOW! with Amy Goodman, friends!) Watch Amy's hour-long interview with film-maker and novelist John Sayles:
www.democracynow.org/2011/7/4/a_moment_in_the_sun_an
The themes that interest Sayles often are the themes that interest me . . .)
Anyone who uses my work to promote "products" of any kind, or to enlarge his/her own commercial "leverage" is not welcome to my work.
While I don't make that many images of pop culture figures, my wish is that my work not appear on t-shirts, lunch boxes, tote bags or other related items.
I have no objection to my work being used for the exploration of outer space-- but never to place commercial messages, (such as Ronald Reagan advocated), on spacecraft or, for example, McDonald's "golden arches" in moon craters.
( end paste)
PLEASE:
If you use my work from Flickr, give me credit-- that is true whether or not you use it in paper publication or on the Net. ALSO PLEASE notify me in advance of any publication of my work you plan, in either medium described above.
ALSO : I try to answer technical questions about my work on the regular comments section under my posted images.
If you have a short, answerable question about technique and send it to me in FlickrMail or e-mail, I'll try to answer it in a straightforward way. Example of an unanswerable question:
What do you consider good art?
I DO NOT ordinarily recommend brands of art materials. Best to experiment around on your own. If I do recommend something, I'll do it in my image comment replies. But ordinarily I'll talk only about my own materials and experience.
I cannot connect you with any publishers or agents. My own powers in such areas amount to less-than-pitiful.
Thanks,
NCM

Rick Tulka says:
"I have been following Norman's work for a number of years now. I am always pleased and thrilled to see his images. I have even learned a thing or two from them, and I couldn't ask for more. His output is amazing to me. The only regret I have is that I can't see the originals. I know now, having met many Flickr friends and having seen their original work, Norman's work must be seen in person. One day, eh Norman? Cup of coffee at Le Sélect?"

steveartist says:
"I've been looking at Norman Mallory's art for some months now. My conclusion is that he is a living example of the penultimate Renaissance artist. His range is truly amazing. He does everything to perfection. Each time I see new pieces I "go to school" on Norman. There is not a more adept artist working anywhere. Period!"

"I find Norman such a wonder, the best kind of wonder, wonderfully strange, and deeply familiar at the same time. Like a getting a hug, and getting pinned to the mat at the same time."

The Big Jiggety says:
"Norman C. Mallory's thrust reminds one of Denis Diderot's, creating an artistic encyclopedia, educating the masses and the rest of us as it were in a world gone insane with text-messaging, tweetering, iPods and other trivia--perhpas the current recession which began at the tail end of 2008 might make some people think twice before latching to the latest new and improved false god. It is good there are people like Norman to put things back in perspective.
If he is deft with the brush, he has honed his writing to an incisive and most cogent degree. A comment from him is worth gold."5th February, 2009

siptakg says:
"I add my piping voice: NC is the magical sage at the easel atop the quivering pile of magical books....he seeks and finds and continues to seek to vibrate in the life of the color he uses, the ideas he connects us to, the intelligent eye with which he sees and the generosity of spirit that he shares with us all. This is a fine and honorable and beautiful artist and human."

"Norman is one of the hardest working artists I can think of, constantly producing amazing drawings and paintings in many mediums (including egg tempera!), and he's also a very interesting person to talk to. There are all kinds of fantastic images at his gallery."

Norman of Lancaster says:
"Illustration is an art form in itself as is graphic design and fine art. N C Mallory's work has elevated the jobbing role of illustration to an exraordinary level. His version of this particular art form can stand alone in any gallery. I wonder if his work is shown outside the USA? I'd like to see it here on this side of the "pond" in the UK sometime."
