** I'm having a rather busy summer working on various projects and therefore will not be posting as much as I normally do. No worries, I'll get back to the normal routine soon.

** Please don't make me one of your contacts if you have nothing in your photostream (or nothing available to view). I will block such users.

In case you are interested-- In addition to taking my own photographs, I collect vintage/antique photography. Most of what I collect falls into the categories of vernacular and found photography.

About My Found/Vernacular Photography Collection

Who: I am an amateur artist/photographer who collects found/vernacular images for various reasons. It can be a real sickness. Those of you into this sort of thing know what I mean.

What: 1960s and prior, although I make lots of exceptions. Things that interest me include: photobooth, polaroids, negatives, glass plates, dags, ambros, tintypes, cyanotypes, RPPCs, card photographs (CDV, cabinet, etc), snapshots, painted photographs, trick photography, kodacolor slides, and the list goes on from here.

When: Been actively collecting for over 15 years, started in the mid 1990s. What I have posted on Flickr is but a small fraction of the material I have managed to gather over the years.

Where: Most of my material was found at auctions, estate sales, flea markets, antique stores, and antique shows. Some of my very best images were actually given to me by close personal friends (you know who you are) in an effort to feed my habit. I am fortunate to have great friends with great eyes for such things. Most of the material in my collection comes from the Midwest because that is where I live. I do travel often, therefore I manage to get a few things from other regions/countries every now and then.

Why: photography = joie de vivre

The Fine Print:

Nothing I have posted is for sale at the moment. That said, I have a lot of material that is not posted. If you have a particular thing you are looking for, and you are a nice person, I might be able to help you out. I am always open to a trade for quality material that appeals to me.

Stealing images is not cool. Please don't copy and/or distribute my images without my express permission to do so. All of my posted images are of physical prints, negatives, or objects that I physically own and have in my possession, or have had in my possession in the past, unless otherwise stated. I post them strictly for educational reasons. Want to use an image? Contact me via email with the details. I am likely to support educational or artistic requests.

I maintain high resolution scans of everything posted, but I will only provide large/higher resolution files to people I know or trust and for specific reasons that I deem appropriate. Lastly, I do have some content that is restricted to "friends" only, some of which tends to be more on the risque side of the house, just a word of caution.

If you like a particular photo or two I would love to hear what you think about it, thus comments are welcome and appreciated. I am always eager to learn about photography and enjoy reading what others have to say. I am by no means an expert, so constructive feedback is appreciated where appropriate.

I am open to collaborating on any books or exhibitions related to found/vernacular photography.

I get numerous contact requests and other special requests every day. Unfortunately, I may miss such requests due to the volume so I ask for your understanding in advance. Please use Flickrmail to contact me if you have a question or concern.

Thanks and enjoy.

About My photography (Photographs that I take):

I shoot both digital and film and prefer to do fine art type work. I am particularly interested in toy camera and alternative processes, but dabble with just about everything.

Tools of the trade include:

Holga, Holgaroid, Fujipet, Diana F, Clack, Full-Vue, Great Wall DF-2, LC-A+, and a host of other toy type cameras. In addition, I also use various Polaroid models, Isola, Leica M3, Roleiflex, Canon 40D, Canon G10, Infrared Canon 350XT, infrared Canon G6, a Century 5x7 field camera, Canon S90 and a host of other modern and vintage cameras in my collection that grows on a regular basis.

Currently working on/learning wet-plate.

"AtypicalArt has this great knack (and good luck) for finding quirky and novel vintage images. AND he's got the eyes and aesthetic sensibility to recognize these treasures when he finds them. It's always a joy to review his image postings. Dave also helps moderate the Photo Trouvee group where like-minded birds of a feather flock together."

"AtypicalArt is a collector who is in control of, and has respect for, the diverse images in his vast collection. He is highly intelligent and has a penchant for learning the history behind the photos, and he shares that knowledge with those who visit his photostream. AtypicalArt is not limited to any category or time period of photo, instead he incorporates many different forms of photography in his photostream for us to enjoy. He was my very first Flickr friend, and I have gained a great deal of knowledge from him. He is always happy to explain what he posts, and has the research to back it up."
