BEHIND THE LENS: My name is Margaret Paredes-Rivas and I am a freelance photographer based in San Diego, CA. I first became interested in the art during my high school years, working as a photographer for the school newspaper. Since that experience I have had the tendency to carry my camera everywhere I go. I definitely like to shoot on location as a opposed to a studio. I like to create fantasy and mystery as well as a world for models to interact in. I am heavily influenced by film and literature. This has also given me the opportunity to grow and obtain a particular style of having no style. I truly love creative collaboration and input from everyone involved in a shoot. I like to observe other photographers in action. I enjoy working - out on the field - because it makes me love the way I see the world through my lens. My camera is the vessel in which I appreciate that there is art everywhere and in each and every one of us, and my photography is the medium to express it. The photographers I admire the most are: Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Philippe Halsman, Herb Ritts, Amy Arbus, Harry Benson, Joseph Llanes, Emily Soto, and Annie Leibovitz.

All of my photo shoots are an out of the box experience and full of fun. Fantasy or reality - it doesn't matter - you decide!

ARTIST STATEMENT: What do you think of when you hear the old phrase: A photo can say a thousand words? I strongly believe that a photograph is not only an image it is the medium to evoke emotions. A FACE talks to me in various ways. It can tell me a thousand stories; a way of life, character, beauty and flaws. I enjoy shooting portraits of people I know and of people I've just met, but most importantly, photographing people with character. A portrait, for me, is a very intimate engagement between the subject, my camera and myself. I embrace the relationship and the connection that, as a photographer, I am able to build with people.

I find my inspiration to shoot my portraits in many things, such as past experiences, culture, events, everyday things, style, and music just to name a few. My photographs range from beauty portraits, fashion, lifestyle, special events, environmental, and social issues. The inspiration for my personal collection comes from cultural and social challenges. Through photography I am able to portray global socio-economic barriers, with hope of igniting a passion for change that will improve society in future generations.

Next time you see a portrait take a good look at it and go beyond the technique, the lighting, and the composition. Take a look at the subject and find what the photographer, through the portrait is trying to convey. Maybe you will be surprised to find out that a thousand words will not be enough to describe what you see and feel.
