My first photograph was taken at the North Carolina Zoo with my parents' camera. I had a perfect image in mind, but my four-year-old self was a little too short and I ended up with a shot of the metal railing.

Since then I've improved a bit (I hope!). In college, I borrowed an early digital camera, a Sony Mavica that took floppy disks (!), from the college media center and rediscovered that early fascination. After that I borrowed a friend's Olympus point-and-shoot until I had enough money to buy my own Olympus Camedia.

When the Camedia was stolen in 2007, I upgraded to an Olympus Evolt and replaced the Camedia as well. All of my work is digital. I use Lightroom (and occasionally PSP6 or X) for postprocessing.

So far I tend towards nature and macro/small item photography; I definitely need more practice at people/portrait photography. I do a lot of product photography for friends and my small business. Given the choice, I like macro and long exposure photography best.

I started out as a purely "documentary" photographer, using very amateur techniques and composition; the photos were a way of preserving where I'd been and what I'd seen.

Since getting the dSLR, I've been moving away from that style and learning to take the time to really see color, shape, light. I'm still documenting what I see, but in the way I see it when I'm truly looking at it.
