Angela Primm is one of the premier voices of our time. Her musical history spans genres, continents, and audiences. She has commanded the attention of mega-stars from Aretha Franklin, Barbara Mandrel, and Brooks and Dunn to Southern Gospel legends, Dolly Parton, and the late Vestal Goodman. Angela’s background is what dreams are made of, and she has yet to accomplish all to which she has been purposed.
Just as Luther Vandross’ beginnings were singing background for musical geniuses, such is the path of this four octave soprano. Angela Primm whose gift of song, love of the Gospel and Gospel music has catapulted her, as the Bible says, “before great men.” As a professional background vocalist, she added rich tones and depth of sound to many lead vocalists, among them were Andre Crouch, Patti Austin, and Gretchen Wilson. Her current and inevitable step as solo artist is the natural progression of a life divinely designed.
Angela’s journey began as most excellent singers do, in the church. She, the youngest of three sisters, and her mom were a group who were called upon weekly to sing in church in her home city, Indianapolis, IN. “Angie” was never excited about being before an audience; she was only seven years old. Her mother saw the talent inherent in her children, especially Angie, and was determined it was going to be used to the glory of God. (Thank God for mothers!)
Angie married her childhood sweetheart, a military man, when she was only eighteen, and began to travel with him as he was stationed throughout the states and Germany. Each church they attended invited Angie to sing. Her voice carried a power of delivery that was so evident her reputation soon began to precede her. She eventually was ordained evangelist and was being invited to church after church to sing and teach. It was during these years Angie realized the gift she was given by God; the responses from congregants confirmed what her heart knew, she loved serving people.
Back in the states, Angie joined a community choir, called “People Helping People.” As God would have it, Angie was “discovered” by Bobby Jones, a well-known television Gospel artist from Nashville, TN. Mervyn Warren, a member of the legendary a cappella group Take-6, auditioned Angie for Bobby Jones. She became a background singer for his exclusive group, “New Life,” touring the nation and appearing on television weekly.
After seven years of traveling to magnificent venues such as the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, the famous Apollo Theatre in New York and even the White House in D.C., and singing before celebrated and renowned personalities like Vice President Al Gore, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Oprah Winfrey, Angie’s heart was not completely satiated.
During these high times of travel and celebrity, Angie also experienced the trauma of divorce. But not to be kept down she continued to move forward, adding even this experience to her life’s calling – helping divorcees heal. It was during this season in her life, Angie decided, “My passion for the Church superceded my desire to sing in a group.” She poured her total energies into serving her home church in Nashville, Born Again Church.
Angie developed other gifts that were within her: administrator and executive secretary for the senior pastor, coordinator of major church conferences, costume designer and seamstress for theatrical and dance presentations for which Born Again Church was noted. She never stopped singing, and even added “actor” to her ever-growing list of attainments.
Her most important achievement however, was marrying her soul mate, John Primm; he knew how to love her 15 years ago and continues to do so to this day. Together, they established “Still Waters, Christian Light Club, Inc.,” a live Christian cabaret that never compromised the Gospel. This show was offered to the public monthly and provided food, “Cotton Club-type” entertainment for all people, and a “safe haven for the saints.” It was a huge hit in Nashville! Still Waters began as a “pilot” in rented venues; but John and Angie realized there were a few more “ducks” that needed to line up. Still Waters’ apex is yet to be reached. John, a general contractor works toward the day when Still Waters will have a permanent location; Angie continued to work in church administration toward the same goal.
Promotion exalted Angela. She was invited to sing with Lynda Randle, an incredible minister of song for Gospel icon, Bill Gaither. Angela was propelled to the next level of her first love, music. It was Lynda who looked into the soul of Angela Primm and compelled her to record her own CD. The generosity of Lynda Randle included permitting Angela to sit alongside Lynda, to sell her own debut CD, “A Little Bit of Heaven.”
What lies ahead for Angela Primm? To begin a ministry that reaches out to those ‘dismembered’ by divorce, and to help build a bigger and better “Still Waters” show and venue, perhaps. But one thing we know for sure is that wherever Angie goes, and whatever Angie does, she will be giving her heart and soul for the love of her Lord. That’s the way it was, the way it is and the way it always will be. Angela Primm is “a little bit of heaven” to those blessed to know her or experience her music, and her wonderful laugh! (You can hear it on Track One!)
