Welcome. ようこそ

I'm a British freelance photographer now living in Tokyo. I trained in photography & film between 1988 and 1991, in Manchester and Plymouth in the UK. I spent almost 12 years in the music business, in the publicity and promotions side of things during which time I had a lot of my music photography published in the UK press and abroad. From 2002 to early 2008 I ran a web design business in the UK. Since then I have been concentrating all my time on shooting and teaching photography.

As well as shooting for some magazines and papers here [TIME, Wall St Journal, BBC and others] I work on a lot of private commissions and accept a wide range of commercial work. Please get in touch if you have any questions or what to hire me for a shoot.

I also teach photography in Tokyo, one-to-one and for small groups and run photowalks and workshops every weekend. More details at the link below, plus lots of photography related articles, projects and materials.

Thanks to everyone who voted for my photoblog in the 2008, 2009 & 2010 Photoblog Awards; I made it to the runner's-up list in the Asian category in 2008 and 2010 and received an honorable mention in 2009. If you fancy voting for it in this year's awards, here is the link. There is also a link there to my blog:

A note about EXIF data: I don't purposely remove my EXIF so please don't jump to the conclusion [as some people have], when you don't see any on my photos, that I hide it along with all the tricks of my trade. I teach. I spend five days a week teaching people stuff about photography and love passing information on. So, here's the reason you won't find EXIF information in my photos: I use Photoshop's 'save for web' function when I save my photos to go on Flickr. It strips out EXIF. The End.

A note about copyright: Please do not use my pictures without emailing me or contacting me first. That's all I ask as I usually say 'yes' to any non-commercial usage of my work on the internet and am very approachable. So, please ask me first as I have had some bad experiences with work being taken without the people having asked first. It's not good manners and it pisses me off.

Photography as a job is hard. It always has been and I have been doing it professionally - either alongside my other work or like now, exclusively - since 1991. The digital arena makes it a bit trickier but I am not complaining as I do what I love for a living and that, frankly, is a luxury. But, I work hard and have three kids to support so please just try and bear that in mind. Just ask if you want to use my work. The internet is a convenient way of finding things, yes. However it is also convenient for contacting people. Sending an email to ask me if you can use a shot takes five minutes? Less even. It' always much appreciated.

Thank you.

Clients for my photography have included: TIME Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Q Magazine [London], BBC News, Metropolis Magazine [Tokyo], Torque Magazine [Singapore], Auto Salon Magazine [Australia], The Independent Newspaper [UK], BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone Magazine, Classic fM Magazine, Songlines Magazine, World Music Magazine, Glastonbury Festival Official Website, Nimbus Records, Ellipsis Arts, Black Box Music.

"Alfie has a unique approach to street photography, which has been inspiring to me and to several friends who share my respect for his work. His aptitude to capture the moment and frame it in a perfect manner, is of the highest level.
The fact the he is, in addition of a very gifted photograph, a very kind person is the bonus (or the cherry on the cake) !
I am looking forward for the upcoming book(s) he will publish."

    Bunter | Japanorama says:

    "Alfie, Alfie, Alfie
Bumped into Alfie in the press club out in Tokyo. Hit it off from the start, there has not been a photographer who has inspired me more, or taught me more about the art for that matter. The kommander of bokeh, he has an innate ability to create beauty out of the simplest of things. Look out for a strange looking man lurking around Shibuya, probably taking photos of taxis. If you see him, I urge you to take him out for a pint, or at least buy him one from me. A great guy to go out shooting with, watch out though, you will get jealous. Not long now 'til our photojournalistic collaborations take over the world. That and us owning the nikon house in Ginza."

"Every time I come to see what new work Alfie has done, I come away so inspired, and at the same time I feel so unaccomplished. Without trying to sound jealous, I wish I had his eyes to see the pictures he composes and his diligence to accomplish such outstanding works. I do know that I am learning from him, and I am glad he puts his efforts here where I can see what a D300 can do."

His great sets of great pictures amazed me big time.
All crisp and clean, simple yet honest.
I never get bored of turning back to his flicker page.
And yes, he is so lucky having his great family and friends, because he deserve it.
    Alfie, you rock!"

    Terri Lynn says:

"Alfie, is one of the most talented photographers I have found on Flickr. Many times I will see technically astute images sorely lacking in qualities of emotion and on the other hand I see emotive images that could be greatly improved with a bit more tecnical savy, like mine for instance. :)

Alfie's work masters both and that's why I think he is one of the best I've seen on here, I enjoy his images immensely!"
