Alex van Heeren is the Honorary Consul for The Netherlands in New Zealand, and also the Honorary Consul for New Zealand in Belgium.
In addition to his diplomatic duties, the Dutch-born investor is known as the founder of The Huka Retreats. The retreats were born from Alex van Heeren’s vision and drive to create a hospitality experience like no other, and comprise three majestic estates, in three very different global locations.
The properties that make up The Huka Retreats are Huka Lodge, situated in Taupo, New Zealand; Grande Provence Estate in Franschhoek, South Africa; and the newly-refurbished Dolphin Island in Fiji. All three are known by the world’s most discerning travellers as luxurious and exclusive havens, and have garnered a number of high-profile awards for service, wines, fine dining and design.
Alex van Heeren, as the creator and entrepreneur behind these retreats, received the Tatler Award for Enduring Excellence on behalf of Huka Lodge in 2010. This award recognises his 25 years of dedication to delivering the best the hospitality industry has to offer.
While hospitality accolades and awards for The Huka Retreats properties are numerous, what really sets them a world apart from others is their location. Despite being situated in three completely different countries, the three Huka Retreats all share breathtakingly scenic landscapes, providing beautiful luxury hideaways – just as their creator Alex van Heeren intended.
