There are no "captures."

A brief word about Flickr Groups. Please do not invite my photos to a group unless you are willing to "favorite" them or comment on them.
In general, I am joining fewer groups these days. I find it much more efficient -- and probably for most people much more appreciated -- to express approval or admiration for work see on Flickr by marking "Favorite" - a one-click process - or by writing a comment.

Those who cannot feel the littleness of great things in themselves are apt to overlook the greatness of small things in others. - Kakuzo Okakura, The Book of Tea

"The love of form is the acceptance of mortality." - Charles Simic

"It is better to learn than to know, but seeing is best of all" -- Goethe.

"Never pose your subjects. Let them move about naturally. All great photographs today are snapshots." - Martin Mukacsi

“Decline is so much more interesting than success. And decline photographs very well. We are surrounded by propaganda, interviews with glamorous people and so on. They have their own agenda. Decline, or something going downhill, is automatically more interesting to me.” -- Martin Parr

"To me the most important thing is the sense of going on. You know how beautiful things are when you're travelling." -- Edward Hopper

"Chance favors the prepared mind." -- Louis Pasteur

I am deeply interested in portraiture and am interested in working with models and photographers who share a fascination with the creative process. I'm particularly keen to find people who can "sit" in New York. Please contact me by email if you're interested: bouncinwithbud@yahoo.com.

The feature included a critical essay by Qiu Xiaolong, a native Shanghainese and celebrated author of the Detective Chen novels. The original essay can be found at this link: nhttp://www.howardwfrench.com/archives/2007/11/25/xinmin_weekly/

"Howard is a photographer I not only respect for his skills as one, but for his interest and passion for his subjects and the stylistically perfect way he portrays the beautiful and intriguing people he encounters along his many journeys.

Browsing Howard's stream is like reading a really good book, watching a really good movie, or hearing a really good song. You just don't want to stop; and so far I haven't."

"Forget his perfect pictures for a second and meet him in person. And you'll discover where his depth of field comes from.

While everyone else tells me to fire away, this man advises me to stop, look, and listen. Thanks for reminding me how to listen to the wind when I photograph.

More power to you, my friend."

    Rainer Jacob says:

"Howard brings to proof that one sentence is spot on: "The progress of our society is not linked to the strengthening of our intelect, it is connected to our ability to widen the horizon of being compassionate." He describes in writing what he thinks and shows with photography how he feels. In both fields he is exceptionally good. A creative that uses each medium to express himself in full."

"First of all, meeting with Howard French was not a coincidence. He was one of the first responders when I shot with Rollei TLR camera for the very first time.

All what he has done are very inspired me a lot. There's no many street photographer who's using an antique TLR camera as the main weapon and he's one of them. The way he composes and the way he takes the emotion of every subject makes me feel understand without many words explained. He's a natural-born "square" photographer.

No more words...just sit back, relax, and enjoy his journey with your feeling :):):)"

    Stuart Isett says:

"I used to say Howard was a great “photographer's writer”. One of those rare writers who understood photography but more importantly, understood how to work with photographers so we could produce the best images to go with his text.

Well that's no more, now Howard has become a photographer's photographer! Being a good documentary photographer means having a very intimate sense of what's going on around you at all times. The tiny details, the glances, the mood, and most importantly, the emotions of those you are photographing. You must know when to shoot, when to stand back, when to talk, when to observe. Few writers I know have that sense, most tend to run through situations like bulls in a china shop ignoring those tiny moments that can say so much. Howard never works that way and has always been able to communicate with his subjects and can easily empathize with their situations, skills that are vital to good picture taking.
