I was born and raised in south Florida. I did much of my undergraduate and all my graduate work at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where I met my wife Robin Hankinson. We moved to Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1985 when I took a job at Southeast Missouri State University, where I teach genetics and do research on genomics of the mushroom Coprinus cinereus.
I've ridden a bicycle on and off since I was a kid. In the last few years I've become a bit obsessed with it. In summer 2007 I rode from Missouri to New Orleans; in summer 2008 I rode with my eldest daughter on a 550 mile trip through Michigan.
I have three daughters, the youngest of whom is now 21.
I sing baritone in the Southeast Missouri St. University Choral Union.
