My friendship with photography happened by accident. In my second semester senior year at Quinnipiac College (in Hamden, CT), I had one remaining elective to fill, so when Photography was offered, I jumped at it and thought it would be cake. WRONG! It was the most challenging and demanding of any class that I had ever taken in college. My professor, Mr. Carpenter, was a die-hard perfectionist and was truly demanding with his coursework. From presentations to subject assignments, I found most of my time carrying running around campus with my 1979 35mm Pentax, which I had purchased for $75 at a Milford pawn shop.
One assignment in particular focused on things we see everyday, and one morning I walked out of my dorm and found some amazing mushrooms. After seeing those mushroom pictures, the prof told me to stop talking pictures of anything else and focus solely on mushrooms. I gladly took it on and discovered that the hunt for mushrooms as well as the perfect shot fufilled my innate nature of HUNTER not GATHERER.
Now over a decade after my introduction to the world of photography, I'm still in pursuit of mushrooms and have learned quite a bit about mycology, the science of fungus. Who knew that there were others that were fanatical for mushrooms like me. Its a huge cult!
Was the class worth it? Hell yes! My camera bag is to my back as my watch is to my wrist. My camera has travelled with me all over the world and has captured some pretty amazing things.
I must admit that I am still very uncomfortable with digital photography. 35mm was definately a comfort zone and only owning a DSLR for 6 months brings me back to me knees begging to learn for more.
That is the beauty of photography...its a trade that one can never fully master and opens doors to other delights that only a lense can.

"I set out to get a picture of a MIssissippi Kite reported to be nesting in Connecticut. While exploring the state forest, I saw purple mushrooms and decided to take some pictures of them. I went on to take pictures of other mushrooms I saw. After downloading the pictures, I searched flickr for a group that might be interested in photos of mushrooms. I came upon adelapace's group "mushroom anatomy 101". It inspired me, and the feedback I received on my pictures encouraged me to go out and take even more shots of mushrooms. I know nothing about mushrooms but have found them fascinating to photograph. I then ventured into being more creative by turning a photo that wasn't too good into an art piece. Adelapace saw them and has given me such positive feedback that I have continued to take photos of mushrooms and play with the photographs. Her feedback and the group she formed has certainly encouraged me to continue looking at mushrooms in new and unique ways."
