My work explores the ways in which an individual may perceive the world through their own specific psychological reactions to sensory experiences. The narrator /curator of my pieces is a hermit, seer, eccentric, an outsider. They do not seek to set themselves apart from others but make no real effort not to. I take on these aspects of myself which reflect these characters, often reminiscent of those about whom I read as a child, and create with their experience as a resource. Each piece comes to represent some part of their story.
In their world, the narrator takes cues on behaviour from the random and arguably uncontrollable nature and events that happen around them. Everyday sights and occurrences become markers, stories or secrets, and influence their existence more than interaction with or observation of people. This isolated experience of the world creates a certain environment; an atmosphere that is anachronistic, where individual whim dictates what is or is not meaningful in this world, and in the waste of others’.
Often my work encounters the everyday or domestic space as a solitary experience, and I seek meaning in the collection and/or creation of objects, stories and materials which may reflect that.
The romanticised notion of the outsider is explored, and as the objects take on their own life beyond their owner/creator, twisted from the original meanings they seek autonomy and deny their heritage.
What kind of world do these isolated beings create?
