Flickr has been like a second university in later life to me - no exaggeration. And more and more I have come to appreciate that this online life, albeit so virtual and in many senses unreal, is actually not so dissimilar from real life as we often imagine.
I've been here for four years now. Just about oldskool, though not as oldskool as some.
And things are not so very different from that first university experience so long ago. Plenty people around at the same time I started have since dropped out, as happened then.
People that seemed good to be around have proved less so over time, as happened then. Interesting souls you hardly noticed in the beginning suddenly grab your attention.
There are complaints about the dean and administrators. Some people transfer to a smaller, ostensibly more liberal college. But most of us remain. Enrol semester by semester, learning from one another, dropping by one another's campus rooms, leaving notes, sometimes engaging in conversations or banter, making one or two friends for life.
Amongst other things I'm the founder/editor of the children's books website ACHUKA
.
Before doing that I had time to write, and have written books about Melville & Hawthorne (a historical novel), Tennyson (a full-length biography) and William Cowper (a short guide to his poetry).
Since going digital, I've always used Sony

I frequently run a slideshow of my Favorites or look back through my Achukapicks set, for inspiration.
Spend far too much time here, but it's a great place to be.
I'm admin for the One To One pool, a group for photos of places that are suited to conversations between two people, whether intimate or friendly, passionate or philosophical, everyday-chit-chatty or tensely dramatic... It's an open group, with no obligations or icons attached.
I tried (but failed) to keep the number of my Contacts at or just below the 2000 mark. All the same, some older Contacts who haven't posted new photos in a long, long time might have to be removed as new ones are added.

"I passed achuka on Brighton Pier this afternoon. He was pointing his camera at Seagulls which made me stop and give him a Moo card. I thought nothing of it as I do it often. But then he wrote to me through Flickr and I have spent three hours traversing and enjoying his work. I will go to bed tonight with some of his images in my mind and that is te greatest compliment I can pay him. I will come back again and again and learn and be inspired."
