For as long as I can remember I have been interested in photography. I consider myself an enthusiast and just a bit more than an amateur. My love for photography is handed down from my maternal grandfather. He used to take many pictures, which was unusual for that time. As a child I remember rummaging through my grandmother’s photo albums and being fascinated by how those images came to life. I would spend hours upon hours looking at all of them.
The faded sepia and black and white photos never ceased to amaze me.

While on his travels in the early fifties, my father had purchased a camera when he was in Milan. To me, it was a beautiful toy that I wouldn’t stop playing with. Though I didn’t actually take photos, I would always pretend to. Later when I was older, my father had a Russian Zenith camera that had a huge lens. That camera never worked properly because of its complexity and cumbersome form. Using that camera, I pretended to be a journalist.

Throughout my adult life, I have never been without a camera. Instamatics, Polaroids, and SLRs. I took many pictures wherever I went, such as Peru, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the US. Taking photos on my travels was helpful in gaining photography experience, as I am self-taught. Today mostly everything is digital, making it hard to share old photos on the web.

I enjoy taking close-ups of almost anything, especially nature and vegetation. I love the use of color in photography, and also simplicity with the photos bearing a precise focal point. I don’t like excessive manipulation and corrections in my photos; my belief is that if the photo is taken well, then no editing is necessary. In the digital world it’s very easy to manipulate and often the end result is not true to the photos original intent. Even though my passion for photography continuously grows, it seems to be challenging to find the time to explore this wonderful world that is ours.

I would love to have photography play a role as my second career someday, or at least as a more professional pursuit. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story, and please don’t hesitate to leave any constructive comments or contact me.
